With so much going on right now, it only makes sense to start enjoying the weekend a day early. And really, who’s going to say no to that?
If you didn’t get your fill of poutine last week on Sparks Street, try the St. Albert Cheese PoutineFest at City Hall. From 11am Thursday until Sunday, you can enjoy traditional poutine or try something new and exciting. With a craft beer garden, poutine eating contest, and live entertainment, it doesn’t get much better than this. Apt613 contributor Mer Weinhold will be on hand judging Ottawa’s best poutine.
Looking for something interesting yet free to do? Ottawa’s museums and galleries continue to offer free admission every Thursday night. On May 5, head to the Museum of Nature for a special adults only event called Science By Night. It’s your chance to explore the museum, meet scientists and play games, adult drinks will be available for purchase in designated areas, too.
The SuicideGirls: Blackheart Burlesque, is burlesque like you’ve never seen before, with pop culture references, a high energy indie soundtrack, and “the sexiest choreographed strip tease to make your inner nerd explode with glee”. Tickets available online for Thursday night at the Bronson Centre.
Also on Thursday night, Amanda Rheaume, an accomplished Ottawa-based Métis singer-songwriter takes the stage at the National Art Centre’s Fourth Stage. On Friday, catch Danny Michel at St. Alban’s Church, or head to the Arts Court Theatre as Ottawa StoryTellers and Ottawa Fringe present The Inventor of All Things by Jem Rolls.
Hintonburg Happening kicks off this weekend and runs for 9 days. Celebrating local artists, designers, musicians and businesses, Hintonburg Happening showcases what makes Wellington West unique. Events are taking place throughout the ‘hood.
Main Farmers’ Market is back for the season at the Museum of Nature. Every Saturday from 9am-2pm, stop in to support local farmers and producers. After spending the winter months indoors at the Aberdeen Pavilion, the Ottawa Farmers’ Market has moved outside the pavilion to and is open Sundays from 9am-4pm.
The 20th Latin American Film Festival continues this weekend, with films playing at Carleton University. Since 1997, the goal of the film festival has been to increase the awareness, appreciation, and understanding of Latin American cinema in Canada’s capital.
Jane’s Walk is a festival of free neighbourhood walking tours, given by local volunteers. Find out more about your ‘hood, or venture somewhere new, with one of almost 50 different walks in Ottawa and Gatineau this weekend.
The first annual CycloFest takes place Sunday May 8 in Little Italy. A stretch of Preston Street will be shut to vehicular traffic and turned into a cyclist’s paradise to celebrate the opening of the newly completed Trillium Line multi-use pathway. Decorate your bike and take part in the bike parade, or spend some time checking out the different activities on site.
And don’t forget – Mother’s Day is this Sunday. Head to Billings Estate for a special Mother’s Day tea, or for the complete opposite, try the Canadian Playboyz Magic Mike show.

Maintenant que la page du calendrier se tourne vers le mois de mai, un renouveau s’installe officiellement. Pourtant, s’il y a quelque chose qui ne change pas, c’est bien d’avoir l’embarras du choix en ce qui a trait à l’offre culturelle. Voici nos suggestions.
Vendredi soir, tout ce qui est froid se transformera en chaud dans le cadre de la soirée Tropikalo au Happy Goat Coffee. Musique caribéenne et beat afro-latin fera danser tout ce qui est vivant. Les DJ Zattar et Trevor Walker enchaîneront les vinyles toute la soirée!
Elliot Maginot remplira d’émotions et de musique pop-alternative le Minotaure le samedi 7 mai. L’artiste en pleine effervescence performera avec son boys band (très efficace!).
Samedi, Moonfruits (folk-pop) et l’auteur-compositeur (r&b) Ivan vont célébrer la sortie des bourgeons au tout nouveau Origin Studio. Il s’agira d’un spectacle intime et chaleureux. Il est fortement recommandé de se procurer des billets à l’avance.
Poutine Fest : Pour une deuxième semaine de suite, Ottawa sera l’hôte d’un festival de poutine! Cette fois-ci ça aura lieu du 5 au 8 mai devant l’Hôtel de ville d’Ottawa. Les poutines les plus folles en ville seront à l’honneur.
Dimanche soir, le groupe Quiet Parade et l’artiste Dylan Menzie s’amènent à Wakefield au Blacksheep pour nous offrir un concert d’après midi! Dès 16h20.
Le lundi 9 mai, Walrus, une formation d’Halifax, présentera son EP Goodbye Something au Minotaure. Walrus est un band composé de 4 membres qui s’inspire de la musique surf et folk-pop des années 1960 et aussi des sonorités plus psychédéliques.
Festival du film d’Amérique latine d’Ottawa
La 20e édition du Festival du film latino américain se poursuit jusqu’au 14 mai. Parmi les 18 films à l’affiche, il en reste une dizaine à voir d’ici la fin du festival. Carga Sellada (Sealed Cargo) est un film bolivien de Julia Vargas et agit à titre de film-tête-d’affiche du festival. Une occasion de traverser les andes boliviennes en train avec trois policiers corrompus, un conduteur anarchiste et une jeune fille de 18 ans. De réaliste à fantaisiste, ce film est feu roulant d’aventures et de rebondissements. À voir ce samedi 7 mai à 16h au River Building Theatre de l’Université Carleton.
