Last weekend I was out on a patio (along with pretty much everyone else in Ottawa) chatting with some friends. It was unanimously decided that summer in Ottawa is one of the best things about this city and while it’s only April, we can feel that glorious summer heat heading our way. This weekend, grab a book and relax in the sun, people watch from one of Ottawa’s many patios, or head out to Gatineau Park and enjoy the fresh air. Or, check out one of these awesome events.
Looking for something new to read? Try the Rockcliffe Park Spring Book Sale – over 15,000 books at unbeatable prices. There’s another used book sale at Lady Evelyn Alternative School. And don’t worry if you buy too many… check out the DIY Shelving event, hosted by Westboro Brainery.
OHMYJAM, Ottawa’s biggest queer jam, is Saturday night at Babylon. Eekum Seekum, Towanda and George Foreman Girl are at Black Squirrel Books, also Saturday night. The last Sunday of every month is NACHTMUSIK at Das Lokal. This month, enjoy Claude Munson and $5 pints.
The 5th Ottawa Grassroots Festival is on this weekend. A non-profit, community-based, volunteer-run organization, their goal is to cultivate community at the local level through a vibrant annual festival of concerts and participatory workshops. Check out their 2016 Program for all the goings-on.
The Ottawa International Game Conference is hosting their first ever free, all ages event, open to the public at Aberdeen Pavilion. You’ll have a chance to play new video games (including some that aren’t even released yet!), talk with game developers about their experiences, take in some stunning art, and support creative makers both locally and internationally.
There’s theatre, too, this weekend. Tonight, How to Make Love in a Canoe 2 is on the Fourth Stage at the NAC. On Friday, catch the opening night of Woyzeck’s Head at Arts Court, a play that explores our struggle to deal with reality. For something more interactive, check out Tank Girl at the Legion on Saturday, a night of art, music, burlesque and more. Costumes are encouraged.
Ever heard of an Instameet? It’s an event where instagrammers get together to explore, share tips and tricks, and take photos together. Worldwide Instameet 13 (aka #WWIM13) is happening this weekend and @igersottawa is hosting an Ottawa event Saturday afternoon along with the Bank Street BIA. L’avantage de publier le Weekend Roundup le jeudi midi c’est que déjà, on implante l’idée dans vos têtes que la fin de semaine est arrivée. D’ailleurs, ce soir, on accueille fort favorablement le lancement du troisième album de SUUNS, Hold/Still à l’église St. Albans. Présenté par le festival Arboretum, on retrouve deux bands ottaviens en première partie : Scattered Clouds et Pyth & The Parenchymas! Notez ceci : ce show sera splendido.
Une autre soirée parfaite s’annonce pour ce samedi alors que Socalled et la bande de Funk-A-Tron 5000 reviennent à Gatineau pour nous réchauffer les muscles. Socalled viendra avec Erik Hove (sax), Katie Moore (voix) et Patrice Agbokou (bass).
Samedi aussi, le Collectif FAU Mardi présente l’artiste Millimetrik qui sera de passage au centre DAÏMŌN, tout juste avant la sortie de son nouvel album Fog Dreams dont la sortie est prévue pour le 29 avril. La première partie sera assurée par Rabieto, un Montréalais originaire de Gatineau. Tout au long de la soirée, VJ INA s’occupera des projections. Après les prestations musicales, les DJs du collectif FAU Mardi se chargeront d’égayer la nuit jusqu’aux petites heures.
Le Petit Chicago vibrera samedi aux sons multiples de Solids, un band de Montréal qui punk-rock-grunge. Depuis leur dernière visite dans le coin, ils ont lancé tout dernièrement un nouvel EP intitulé Else. Ils partageront la scène avec Bateau Noir et The Pinsents. Cette soirée s’annonce décapante.
Dimanche soir, Francis Faubert partagera la scène avec ses invités spéciaux Charabia et Maggie’s March. Ce spectacle sera présenté à l’Église St-Mathieu au profit de la fondation l’Arche Agapè.
Pour le reste des activités : huilez votre vélo et allez promener le chien de votre voisin dans le parc. On vous encourage même à porter vos verres fumés la nuit.
