The Ottawa School of Art‘s Annual Holiday Fundraiser began November 26 and runs to the end of this week, closing on December 20th. Each year, a wide assortment of distinctive art pieces created by students, instructors and alumni are on display and available for sale at very attractive prices. All funds collected from this event go towards the OSA bursary program that finances art classes for youth facing economic or social hardships.
Included in this holiday sale, will be the works of the late Ojibway artist, Tom Hogan who bequeathed 200 of his artworks to the school. Hogan, himself, was an OSA bursary recipient and an accomplished and highly talented, self-taught Woodland style artist.
Most of his vibrantly colourful artworks express a powerful spirit determined to bring light to some of life’s harsher realities and were painted here in Ottawa at the Shepherd’s of Good Hope. Although he passed away last January, his legacy continues to be an inspiration for many.
Proceeds from the sale of Hogan’s artwork will be used to financially support a creative outlet for young Ottawa residents, who like Tom, might not otherwise have access to artistic instruction.
A memorial for Lee Matasi is also being held until December 16th during this holiday fundraiser. This memorial exhibition marks the 10th anniversary of the Ottawa School of Art alumni’s passing and showcases some of the fine artworks produced in the course of his short life.
