#Support613 Gift Guide: Music, theatre and art ideas

By Apartment613 on December 7, 2021

Welcome to Part 4 of Apartment613’s 2021 local holiday gift guide! Check the #Support613 Holiday Gift Guide often for new suggestions.

This gift guide is for your creative friends and family, whether they create or consume art, or enjoy doing both. Feel free to treat yourself to these awesome experiences and opportunities too. After all, when do we ever have too much art and culture in our lives?!

Hands-on Art

Regardless of whether or not they’re the next Picasso or Van Gogh, you may know someone who just loves getting creative and working with their hands. If that’s the case, why not gift them a hands-on art class or experience? Hintonburg Pottery offers gift certificates that can be used toward their workshops, classes, and even camps. Get one online in a flash, with a few preset amounts to choose from. If you’re looking for something that also allows for drop-in creativity, Art Haven has gift cards for their Barrhaven and Kanata ceramic painting studios. They’re available for purchase in-studio or online, and you can load up to $250 on each card.

For all the print lovers out there, Possible Worlds offers workshops on screen printing, risograph, book arts, and more. You can either gift a particular workshop or purchase an online gift certificate. Courses run by the Ottawa School of Art (OSA) also cover a wide range of mediums and techniques. Buying for a generalist art lover? Not sure what kind of art they’re into? An OSA gift certificate may just do the trick! Certificates can be used for courses at their downtown Ottawa and Orleans locations, as well as for online courses. You need to call or visit in-person to purchase one.

Visual Art

Nothing says a thoughtful gift like a piece of local art, whether you pick up a print, magnet or card from Art House Café or stop by your favourite coffee shop like Happy Goat or the Ministry of Coffee to see which artist is lining their walls this month. Art House Cafe is located in Chinatown, while Happy Goat and Ministry have multiple locations all over the city.

For the classical art lover or an art history buff, check out the National Gallery of Canada gift shop and the Ottawa Art Gallery gift shop, which feature Indigenous art, accessories like tea towels and notebooks, framed original art works, prints, and so much more! Plus, it’s an excuse to stop by an art gallery. If you’re not sure what your friend would like from the gift shop, you can go a step further and gift them a whole membership to the National Gallery! It includes unlimited admission, discounts, workshops, and many special perks. Now, that’s what we call a *gift* to remember.

And if you are looking for even more ideas, check out our gift guide on visual art by local artists from last year! It’s full of amazing individuals and collectives so you can truly find something for every taste, home, and apartment.

If you have a friend or family member who loves performing arts, tickets are sure to be an easy win. Check out venues like the Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) and the National Arts Centre (NAC) to see what shows are in store for 2022. Don’t want to make the choice of what show to gift? The Gladstone and Odyssey theatres offer gift cards and gift certificates, respectively. There are also 4-ticket packs available for the GCTC, which can be exchanged for shows this season or upcoming seasons.

And for all the film buffs out there, we haven’t forgotten about you! The ByTowne Cinema has Classic, Student, and Senior memberships available for purchase online. If you head over the box office of the Mayfair Theatre, you can pick up a gift certificate or an annual membership card!

We all know someone with music in their DNA. This holiday season, why not give them a night filled with memorable, melodious sounds. You can get tickets to musical performances with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra or NAC Orchestra. Alternatively, if you think they’d prefer something with a different vibe, check out the many upcoming events at venues like LIVE! on Elgin, Mavericks, and the Bronson Centre Music Theatre.

If you’re looking for something holiday-themed, here’s a list of local concerts taking place throughout December.

You can even delight someone with a new addition to their music collection. For ideas, take a look at the gift guide of local record stores and vinyl music labels that Apt613 put together last year.

Now that you have a perfect gift for your arts & culture lover, seal the deal with a beautiful handmade Christmas card from The Village Quire or a greeting card from a local Ottawa yoga teacher. Papier has stunning stationery, greeting cards, and gifts too.

Our favourite part of gifting arts & culture experiences, whether you enjoy a NAC Orchestra show or pop by the Gladstone Theatre for a performance, is the ability to connect with whoever you attend with. Or with yourself. We all need an escape in today’s times and arts & culture is a beautiful way to stay present, yet allow yourself to be open to new experiences.
