Happy Capital Pride Ottawa! There are plenty of cool events happening this weekend (and beyond!) to celebrate pride in the capital, plus a bunch of great music and theatre shows all weekend long.
Well friends, the heat is back. Let’s make the most of it and take advantage of the weekend to soak up all the summer vibes as you enjoy events as diverse as Craft Beer Week, Shakespeare in the Park, an indie bookstore fest, and outdoor movies.
Odyssey Theatre returns to Strathcona Park this August for its 39th season with a new play written by the company’s founding artistic director, Laurie Steven. The Girl With No Hands was inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale “The Girl Without Hands”. However, if you don’t know that tale, don’t worry. For Steven, the fairy tale was just a jumping off point to a complete reimagining in her own play.
It’s another busy summer weekend, with the start of Capital Pride, a couple of great food fests, flower markets, theatre—a little bit of everything.
Odyssey Theatre is bringing a brand new creative arts fair to Ottawa at Strathcona Park from Aug. 16–18. Titled Myth, Lore, and Stories of Wonder, Odyssey Theatre is exploring a variety of performances with over 40 different artists. Arts Program Director, Julia Rocchi, says that these performances will include dance groups, individual and group storytelling and some hands-on visual arts making.
We are halfway through August now, friends, and the weather couldn’t be better for exploring the city. This weekend is another big one in the city, and whether you are in the mood for live music, fireworks, cultural fairs, Pride events, or a cozy night at the theatre, our beautiful city has you covered.

This week marks the return of one of my favourite summer events: the Grands Feux du Casino Lac-Leamy. And while this means we’re heading towards the end of summer, there’s still plenty to see and do!
Odyssey Theatre have returned to Strathcona Park for their production of Molière’s The Miser. Bruce Burwell calls it a “sort of 17th-century Succession” with strong performances and bright masks and costumes.
Odyssey Theatre has created a podcast series of dramas called The Other Path: a set of five unrelated stories in which old fairy tales have been reimagined in a modern setting.
