“Fissures X La Menagerie” is a captivating show that offers two distinct performances in one. The first part features Milie Véronneau’s solo dance and theatrical performance, while the second showcases an ensemble dance piece by Johanna Simon, featuring Manon Sérignat-Daléas and Sarah Roy.

“Fissures” presents an abstract performance that combines interpretive dance with experimental, poetic dialogue. The piece explores themes of sexuality, grief, and abuse, providing moments of cathartic release. As the performance is abstract, each audience member is likely to leave with a unique interpretation, but the underlying themes are clear.

Véronneau’s performance is a testament to her exceptional training and talent as a dancer. She effortlessly conveys thoughts, actions, and emotions, both physically and through dialogue, leaving no doubt that she has dedicated countless hours to rehearsal.

The set is minimalist, creatively lit to allow Véronneau to fully use the space. The strategic use of coloured tones subtly emphasizes specific areas of the stage, drawing attention to particular movements.

Johanna Simon’s “La Ménagerie” cleverly incorporates a staircase, lighting, and dance to narrate an abstract story which this reviewer interpreted as reminiscent of the monotony and drudgery experienced by corporate office workers. Experimental light and sound elements add depth to the performance. Although the set remains minimalist, the lighting plays a pivotal role in conveying the story. The lighting designer almost becomes another character, with the lights and performers dancing together, offering multiple interpretations for the audience.

The euphoric and morose music and sounds throughout the show, composed by Jad Orphée Chami, effectively connect and elevate the two performances. However, the use of typewriter sounds as an experimental technique may momentarily disconnect some audience members, though it tries to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Simultaneously, the dancer attempts to synchronize their movements with the typewriter sounds, but the random and undiscernible rhythm creates a deliberate disassociation between sound and dance. Eventually, a rhythm emerges, allowing the audience to reconnect with the performance. This intentional play with disconnecting and reconnecting of sound and movement creates a unique and thought-provoking experience.

Fissures X La Menagerie is an ideal choice for Fringe-goers seeking a truly fantastic showcase of professional interpretive dance, accompanied by outstanding lighting and sound design.
