Fashion is sometimes dismissed as the most frivolous of the artistic pursuits. But Art in Fashion 613, an event hosted October 17th at Library and Archives, is hoping to change that.
The inaugural event is the product of a partnership between Bombshell Revival Designs, an Ottawa-based fashion design venture, and CreativeOttawa.com. Kym Brown, the founder of Bombshell Revival, left a career in corporate law to pursue her vocation as a fashion designer. She formed her business on the premise of empowering women, citing fashion as a way to embrace one’s own individuality. The collaboration was a no-brainer for CreativeOttawa.com, an online hub that seeks to connect the Ottawa community with local artists.
Art in Fashion 613 will kick off with a fashion show introducing guests to the wares of over 40 local designers and artisans in attendance. Following the show, guests will be able to shop for creations displayed on the catwalk at an expansive night market. The night market will place compelling visual installations and vendors within a festive setting, featuring burlesque entertainment, a DJ, and a food and wine bar manned by Savour Italy. The event will also introduce the Memory Dress Project, an installation of over 500 mixed-media pieces emphasizing human connection, that will be displayed at the event and then dismantled.
Not particularly interested in fashion? Vendors at the night market span an eclectic range, selling everything from repurposed lighting fixtures to personalized temporary tattoos. Of course, many of the vendors will be displaying locally-made designer clothing and accessories that combine artistic flair with environmental sustainability. The roster includes a company that exclusively sells tutus, an artist who forges wind chimes from antique silverware, and gender-neutral baby wear. For the full list of artists and vendors, check out the event’s website.
Art in Fashion 613 happens on October 17, 2015 at Library and Archives Canada. Doors open at 6pm and festivities begin at 7 with a fashion show exhibiting the event’s vendors and artists. Earlybird tickets are available online for $20 and at the door for $25.
