The grindcore veterans, Fuck the Facts start their three week long tour into the US this weekend, and the band took to their Facebook page to rev up the crowd before the performance. “Saturday at Dekcuf will be the kickoff of our North American Tour. Let’s make this show so killer that the rest of the tour will seem shitty in comparison,” the band said. A blunt and challenging foreshadow to the show and their tour, but this band has reason to be optimistic about the turnout. “I’m thinkin’ it’ll be a good night,” founding member Topon Das says. “I mean, this is our hometown and we don’t play here very often. A bunch of our friends will come out and make it an entertaining kick-off to the tour.”

Fuck the Facts had modest beginnings. In the late 90’s, founding member Topon Das was working on personal projects when he decided to form the band. “I was starting to get into grindcore in the mid-late 90s,” he says. “It was a project I just decided to do. I had a four-track, I had a $40 guitar with like, only five strings on it and a drum machine.” He says, “It wasn’t until ’99 that I gave it a name.”

Once Das found some like minded musicians, Fuck the Facts started to grow from a personal project into a band. “The band version actually started in 2001. My friend started playing drums, we got another guy to play guitar and we even had a different vocalist when we first came on.” The lineup has since been stable, and they haven’t changed up their members in over seven years after the addition of their bassist. They’ve since released numerous albums and EP’s, the newest of which, Amer, is the reason for their tour.

The band’s listeners straddle the border between Quebec and Ontario, with members living divided between the provinces as well. Because of this, Fuck the Facts creates music in both official languages, widening their fan base. For Amer, they decided to do something different. “It’s our first release where the lyrics are all in French,” Das says, “Our vocalist is French and usually with the albums and all of the other releases, she’ll do a French song in there. In this one we decided them all in French.”

The album was released last June on vinyl and made available digitally, another example of their accommodating tactics for their listeners. “We want to kind of be all over the place, and not feel like we’re stuck in one style. We try to work it more as artists and not just musicians.” Das says. “We never close ourselves off and say ‘Ok, this has to be a fast song’. We’re always open to bringing in new ideas.”

This strategy has worked well for the band, which attracts a varied audience of metal listeners. With their ever-changing sound, Fuck the Facts has the stamina to make another decade of grindcore.

Fuck the Facts plays Cafe Dekcuf this Saturday night, April 12 2014. Tickets can be purchased online. Their album, Amer, can be purchased here.
