Weekly News Review: Cycling from the burbs, a giant blanket fort party, upgrading Plouffe Park and more!

By François Levesque on August 13, 2012

Thinking about cycling downtown from the burbs? Journalists from YourOttawaRegion tried it out. Read about their trials and tribulations as they traveled from Kanata, Orleans, Barrhaven and Nepean to City Hall.

There’s been a lot of bat stories recently, and it’s not because of The Dark Knight Rises. Rather, one of the hottest summers in decades has set off an eruption of bat problems in Ottawa. While bats are generally not dangerous, there’s been a bit of a scare after an Ottawa resident found a dead bat that had rabies. Here’s a bit of info if you end up having a bat in your home or around your property.

Giant blanket fort party you say? Yep. You read right. Dave Ellis, owner of Funhaven asked Reddit users “If you owned a 40,000 sq ft entertainment facility in Ottawa and you wanted to give back to Reddit, what would you do?” A blanket fort party is what got the most votes. The awesome event takes place on August 25. Read more about the Community-inspired event on OpenFile.

Plouffe Park, at the intersection of Little Italy and Chinatown, has the opportunity to get a major upgrade. The field, which is often called the dustbowl by its users has the opportunity to get $125K in upgrades. The opportunity to renew this space has arisen because a local youth soccer team is 1 of 15 throughout Canada eligible to win a BMO contest to have their home field rehabilitated.  The winner will be determined though online votes Aug 13-27.  Any Canadian resident can vote, once a day for 15 days.  Go vote and support the community!
