Happy Labour Day, Ottawa! This weekend is a little less crazy than the rest of the summer has been, but there’s no shortage of events to check out. Don’t forget to stop by the Apartment613 Talks event tonight, featuring local sports lovers and intramural organizers talking about how play – for kids and grownups alike – helps make this a vibrant city. Bonus: deals on beer and food at 8 Locks Flat, where the Talks is taking place!

For you music lovers, Toronto indie band By Divine Right will be at Pressed with Magneta Lane on Thursday night. Dayglo Abortions are also playing that night at Mavericks. On Friday, Raw Sugar will host local band Medhi Cayenne Club with Louis-Philippe Robillard, while down at Gabba Hey the always entertaining Ketamines will take the stage. It’s also the Double Barrel dance party down at Mugshots, while out at the Black Sheep Miss Polygamy and Zoo Legacy will be playing. Saturday, Hemi will take over Fatboys with power funk, and Mara & the Marigold with Ptarmigan will stop by Zaphods.

The Mini Maker Faire also happens Saturday and Sunday down at the Science and Tech Museum, featuring creativity from all corners of the city. You can also relive your Bluesfest experience through art at the Portraits of Bluesfest event tonight, down at Patrick Gordon Framing.

My Summer Crush improv extravaganza wraps up this weekend down at Arts Court, with performers coming in from Montreal to strut their improv stuff – including Easy Action, an action blockbuster created in the moment and guaranteed to be entertaining.

Always dreamed of wielding a mighty sword? Learn this weekend at the Ottawa Swordplay open house. Or, put your talents out there and audition for the Ottawa Classical Choir!

In other weekend specials, the Hintonburg Public House will have a special brunch on the holiday Monday (as well as a back-to-school dinner special on Tuesday). Catch the best of the world’s advertising at the Bytowne Thursday night, featuring all the commercials you wouldn’t have muted. It’s also the Serbian Festival all weekend long, with food, music and dance down on Albion Road.
