It’s hard to believe that this weekend marks the beginning of March! With warm temperatures and plenty to do, it’s time to celebrate its arrival and get out on the town.

All Weekend

The I Heart Beer and Taco Festival takes place this Friday and Saturday at Aberdeen Pavilion at Lansdowne. The festival features over 20 different breweries and distilleries, including Cowbell Brewing Company, Dominion City Brewing Company, NB Distillers, and Wolfhead Distilleries. There will also be some incredible food by Junior & the Kid BBQ, SmokeBox Catering, Mona’s Taqueria, and many others. As far as entertainment goes, there will be board games, beer pong, hot sauce tasting, an arcade, a ’90s dance party, and much, much more.

Slo’ Tom & the Handsome Devils are celebrating the release of their new album, Doing Hard Time, by throwing an album release weekend at House of Targ. Friday night will feature a “rip-roaring country party” and Saturday night they’ll follow up with an intimate acoustic set. They will be joined by Ottawa surf band the Reverb Syndicate and Ottawa rock band Double Talker.

Nobody Sees a Flower, an exhibit featuring the works of artists from the 44.4 Mother/Artist Collective, begins this weekend at the Ottawa Art Gallery. The vernissage takes place on March 1 and there will be a tour and artist talk on Sunday afternoon.

This weekend’s mild weather makes for the perfect opportunity to visit a sugarbush! There are plenty to choose from in and around town. There’s the Vanier Sugar Shack, the Sugar Bush at the Log Farm, Stanley’s Olde Maple Lane Farm, Maple Fest at Proulx Farm, and Fulton’s Sugarbush. Each have their own attractions, in addition to maple syrup, so check out their websites to find what best suits your fancy.

Gatineau-Ottawa Bicycle Show is back this year for a fourth edition this Friday through Sunday at the Palais des Congrès de Gatineau. You’ll find plenty of inspiration for the upcoming cycling season, including nearly 100 exhibitors and brands, many from the Outaouais region, plus an indoor test track where you can try out a bike before buying.

Thursday

The first Flannel Fundraiser, in support of Out at Camp!, takes place at Ego Space this Thursday. There will be a silent auction, food and drink, and an exclusive shopping experience, where 20% of purchases made will be donated to the cause.

If your Thursday night would be better with a little live music, head down to LIVE! on Elgin, where Love Language, Valley Girls, and Grey Brisson are playing a show.

Friday

There are some great musical events happening this Friday. Thievery Corporation plays the Bronson Centre this Friday and there are still tickets available! High Waters is playing an EP release show for their new EP Not Dead Not Alive this Friday night at Irene’s Pub. They will be joined by Ottawa’s Annie Martel and Megan Francoeur.

If you haven’t already had the chance this winter, or even if you have, you can try your hand at Snowshoeing Under the Stars in Gatineau Park before there’s no more snow. No snowshoes? No problem! You can rent them from the event coordinators before heading out on the trail!

Saturday

It’s the first Saturday of the month and that means MOD Nite is happening at LIVE! On Elgin. DJ Emmett will be spinning the very best Motown, soul, R&B, ’60s classics, and psych. Boogie down to some excellent tunes by the greats like Etta James, Jackson 5, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, and more.

If you are into hockey, you’ll want to check out the PWHL game between Ottawa and Toronto happening at TD Place on Saturday afternoon.

Juno-nominated comedian Zabrina Douglas, who is also a mom and a registered nurse, will be performing her “Nurses on Nights” comedy show at Cultures Comedy Club inside Nuvo Lounge on Saturday. This will be her first performance in Ottawa. Tickets are $20. The show will also include Ottawa comedian Dawn Xanklin.

Local indie band Juventud play an EP release show at the Rainbow Bistro this Saturday, with Ottawa bands Stoby, Maybury, and Motherland.  Juventud’s music blends lo-fi bedroom pop and surf rock.

The Ottawa Family Cinema is showing the new animated family comedy Trolls: Band Together in 3D on Saturday at 2pm. A registered charity run entirely by volunteers, all of their proceeds go toward giving free movie tickets to underprivileged families. They have a snack bar with freshly-popped popcorn, hot dogs, and treats at very reasonable prices.

This Saturday at 8pm, Capital Chamber Choir presents Sun-Dogs, a tribute to winter, at St. Joseph’s Parish. The title piece “Sun-Dogs” was composed in 2006 by Scottish composer James MacMillan. The program will also include works by Canadian composers Andrew Balfour, Christine Donkin, Frances Farrell, Don MacDonald, Sarah Quartel, and Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks. They will be joined by cellist Sonya Matoussova, violinist Oleg Chelpanov and pianist Sonya Sweeney.
