Friday

Local artist An Nguyen is hosting a series of monthly painting classes outside of the Wellington West Retirement Residence. October’s painting celebrates the colourful Mexican festival “Day of the Dead,” and is recommended for all levels. Classes are $45 per person and include instruction and all materials. Negotiating Borders /Au-delà des frontières / 경계협상 opening night SAW Gallery. Negotiating Borders is an exhibition that contemplates the various phenomena brought about by the division of South Korea and North Korea through the lens of contemporary art.

Saturday

613flea returns to Aberdeen Pavilion this Saturday from 10am–4pm.

Six finalists will compete for a $10,000 first place prize at the National Capital Opera Competition. Enjoy a beautiful afternoon of opera favourites while supporting Canada’s future opera superstars!

The Canadian Museum of Nature is holding an Open House of its Research and Collections facility on Saturday from 10am-4pm (last entry at 2:30pm). Go behind the scenes and see some of the museum’s 14.6 million natural history treasures—from plants to animals to fossils and minerals. This is a free event, but timed tickets must be reserved.

Spirit of Rasputin’s, Ottawa’s folk music society, presents an evening of music and celebration at 8pm at Westboro Masonic Hall. Ottawa singer-songwriter duo Evenchick & Hucul share the program with Tony Turner (“Circle of Song”, “Harperman”) and Pat Moore on bass.

Need to pick up some fresh supplies? The Great Ottawa Artisans Destash brings together 50 artisans and crafters and their extra crafting materials, tools and items used to create that they might not need anymore. Admission is free.

Wronglais sees a roster of veteran English comedians translating their best jokes into French for the first time, using laughter to transcend Canada’s cultural and linguistic divide. Brave Anglophone comedians including Paul Baluyot, Rodney Ramsey, Mariam Khan, Dana Saleh, Darren Henwood, and David Pryde will perform their full professional stand-up sets in French, without speaking a word of English, at the Laugh Lounge (61 York Street).
