Many of us are getting back into our fall routines, but that doesn’t mean summer’s over. Check out just this small sampling of all the great events going on this weekend across the capital and take advantage of the weather for as long as you can!

All weekend

Ottawa Comicon is back and while you’re wandering the exhibition hall, checking out the vendors, artists, and panels, don’t forget to score autographs from huge stars like Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, Star Trek), Christopher Ecclestone (Doctor Who), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian), and more.

Ottawa’s independent movie theatres always have great shows on for you – check out their schedules.

AfroFestival takes place Saturday and Sunday at Mooney’s Bay Beach and is a great opportunity to experience a wide selection of African arts, culture, food, dance, fashion and more. General admission is free, the festival is family-friendly, and it takes place rain or shine!

The 2023 ArtEast Fine Arts Studio Tour has stops as centre-east as Lowertown, Alta Vista and Rothwell Heights to as far as Martins’ Corners/Cumberland and everywhere in between. It’s a great way to see local artists and get the how and where they work on their creative endeavours. If you’re interested in art this is a great way to get to see the process firsthand, up close and even get to chat with the artists themselves. Participating artists include everything from painting to glasswork and more.

It’s the 10th anniversary of the Riverside Festival held at the Canadian Museum of History – and what a weekend of events! There’s a fantastic lineup of electronic music, including Seven Lions and Zeds Dead, a great food truck selection and after parties – and you can bring your refillable bottle to stay hydrated!

Thursday

The Hintonburg Night Market is back for another week at the Urban Art Collective. Check out local makers, artists, businesses and entrepreneurs with lots of great selections.

City Sounds Live free performances continue tonight, with Joe McDonald, Annie Martel, and Oddeline at Wedel-Touch of Europe in Westboro.

Join the Ottawa Bike Cafe for Happy Afternoons in September for live music, drink specials and free samples. This Thursday, grab beer tastings and free samples from Whitewater Brewing Co. and hear live music from Reef & Ramel.

Saturday

Mamboleo FC is hosting a charity soccer tournament at the RA Centre fields for two great causes – their own newcomer integration soccer program as well as the Mathare Community Slums Association (MaSCA) to support life-changing community initiatives in the Mathare slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

I wouldn’t be doing my due diligence if I didn’t tell you this very important Public Service Announcement: There is a Buttertart Festival taking place in Stittsville today with at least 11 vendors. I feel like if I pace myself I can try one of each – I mean, it would only be fair right?

The Route to Canada is an extraordinary showcase of step, spoken word, and song, aimed at celebrating the resilience, creativity, and profound influence of ancestors in the African Diaspora. There are two performances at the Gladstone Theatre at 4 and 8 pm.

Check out La Grande Fripe for the Outaouais’ largest second-hand thrifting experience for clothing and accessories. Check out the vendors, try things on and head home with your more eco-friendly hauls!

The Old Ottawa Porch Sale is like a calmer version of the Great Glebe Garage Sale but with just as many deals to be had – and on porches 🙂.

Bry Webb of the Constantines is back with new music and will be playing at the Rainbow Bistro with Steph Yates of the Cots opening.

Gatineau RiverFest, an annual festival hosted by Friends of the Gatineau River is happening on September 9 from noon to 10 pm in Wakefield and Chelsea. The program includes dance, live music and activities, plus an eco and artisan market. Events include a paddle parade with an estimated 150 paddlers, a canoe-ballet performance, live music and dance performances.

The Latin Sparks Festival takes place from 3 to 11 pm at LeBreton Flats, celebrating its 10th anniversary. Hard to beat a  latin fiesta with food, musicians and dancing.

Help keep more things out of our landfills by repairing them! The Ottawa Tool Library is hosting another Repair Cafe where you can bring in your small items for free repair. Think electronics, clothing, small appliances, jewellery, bikes and more!
