Now that we’re done with enough April showers to bring us May flowers… and June… and July… get out there and see all the great events taking place this weekend across the city!

All weekend

Boutique Cornerstone takes place Friday and Saturday at Thyme & Again. All funds raised go to support Cornerstone Housing for Women.

Until May 13 you can catch Heaven at the National Arts Centre. This revival of a Citadel Theatre Production, curated by Black Theatre Workshop, tells the story of Black pioneers in Alberta and particularly the story of a relocated schoolteacher and the memories that threaten her new life. The May 5 performance is a Black Out night which sees playwright Cheryl Foggo attend a pre-show discussion, and is an open invitation for Black audiences to experience the performance with their community, but all audiences are welcome to attend.

Be sure to see what’s playing at Ottawa’s independent cinemas this weekend.

The spring edition of the Ottawa Writers Festival takes place all weekend, with many incredible talks from a number of authors and their books on topics ranging from the convoy protests to defining masculinity to quantum physics to global Indigeneity to ideas of safety and home and much more.

The Ottawa Guild of Potters presents its Clay Festival at the Horticulture Building at Lansdowne Friday through Sunday with pottery for sale, a juried exhibition, a pottery throw-down, children’s activities and lots more.

TACTICS presents Shorelines at LabO—check out this preview of the show, written by local Ottawa artist and award-winning playwright Mishka Lavigne.

Jane’s Walk Ottawa-Gatineau has its launch event Friday night and then numerous walks taking place Saturday and Sunday, with a whole bunch of great community-focused topics. You could walk and hear from folks about themes like Jane Jacobs 101, community gardens, eco-focused heat pumps and solar panels, Indigenous presence in downtown Ottawa, and even the proposed 15-minute neighbourhood to be built on the site of a big-box mall. (Ahem, I might be a bit biased on that last one 😉 Come say hi!)

Friday

Studio Space Ottawa presents The Warehouse Art Party, a fundraiser by artists to build more studios. It includes an art cafe, art sale, raffle and silent auction, live singers and DJ, and a cash bar. It sounds like an incredible night to support the city’s artists!

If you want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, check out this celebration with the Ballet Folklorico y Mariachi Aztlan at the Maison du Citoyen in Gatineau. Mexican food, games and activities will also be available.

Saturday

Calling all crafters! The Hintonburg Fabric Flea Market takes place at the Fisher Park Community Centre with more than 70 vendors. There’s a $3 entry; be sure to bring cash for the smaller vendors as well.

Canterbury Trebles Women’s Ensemble, founded in 2005, will celebrate its 15th anniversary, three years late due to the pandemic, with the world premiere of Pieces of Flame, a new choral work by celebrated Canadian composer Christine Donkin. The concert will also feature highlights from the choir’s 15-year repertoire.

Rescheduled from all this rain we’d been getting (ahem, maybe check ahead again before going) the Fly Market takes place around Top of the World, Clocktower Brew Pub and THR33’s Snack Bar at 575, 581, and 589 Bank in the Glebe with great vintage and streetwear vendors all together in one spot.

In the same vein, Arlington Street is closing down for an Art Market, hosted by coffeeshop Arlington Five.

Pour Boy is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this weekend with a free BBQ, live bands, no cover, and throwback pricing.

Atlético Ottawa are debuting their Making it to Safety jersey in honour of their Mother’s Day match at 7pm. The jersey is an extension of their partnership with Shelter Movers Ottawa and features drawings from children in the program. Some proceeds from each jersey sale go to Shelter Movers Ottawa, who provide free moving services to those fleeing intimate partner violence. The match is against Pacific FC and you can check out our season preview as Atléti try to defend their throne this season.

The Ottawa Tool Library is having a garage sale where you can get great deals on tools that have already been tested out by their expert tool doctors.

Sunday

Celebrate Asian Heritage Month with special film screenings presented at the Ottawa Public Library’s Ben Franklin Place. First up at 11:30am, in collaboration with the Indonesian Consulate, will be the film 5 cm. At 2:30pm the U.S. Embassy presents the documentary film The Donut King.
