Pride month may be coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean we ought to stop celebrating (never stop celebrating). As Ottawa plays host to the 40th annual convention of the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs (IAGSDC), more than 700 LGBTQ+ square dancers and their allies and their mothers (and then some) can participate in this event from July 2–9 at the Westin Hotel.

Since its founding in 1983, the IAGSDC has grown to 55 clubs the U.S., Canada, and Japan. The organization attracts myriad gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender dancers. Anyone of any sexual orientation is welcome at any IAGSDC member club.

“The annual convention is like a family reunion,” says Joel Smith, co-chair of the event organizing committee. “Being able to be around people of like minds and interest truly make the world a small place. No matter which corner of the world you come from, we welcome you with open arms. Square dancing is friendship set to music.”

Dancers from across Canada, the U.S., and as far away as Australia are in for a packed eight days, including a series of flash-mob style pop-up square dances around the city on July 9. There will also be dinners, tours, and various other fun activities. Want to try something new? Feel free to drop by on Wednesday, July 5, at 7pm for a free introduction to square dancing.

Not only that, but on Thursday, July 6, there will be an opening ceremony followed by 11 square dance callers offering 168 hours of square dancing.

“We feel a safe place to be you is so important,” says Smith. “Given the current political landscape and the increase in hate crimes, we feel it’s increasingly important for people to have safe spaces where they can be themselves. Yes, our mission is square dancing, but it encompasses so much more. Where else can you get a solid physical and mental workout while making new friends and having a great time? Our club has members from all sexual orientations, all genders and gender identities and all age groups. There really is something for everyone.”
