Video of the Week: This 1985 commercial for The Westin Hotel

By Greggory Clark on April 7, 2021

These days, Ottawa hotels are going far out to market their rooms, like this Bluesfest staycation package dreamt up by the local mega-festival and Ottawa Tourism. But how did a downtown hotel market itself in… oh say 1985?

This recently unearthed TV advertisement for Ottawa’s Westin Hotel was digitized by Betamax King and uploaded to YouTube for your viewing pleasure.

The commercial opens with a shot of a Cadillac pulling up to The Westin (with a “WESTIN” vanity license plate!), a word from the hotel’s then-general manager (English accent!) and in 30 seconds covers about all the *must-see* locations in downtown Ottawa in 1985: Parliament Hill and the Rideau Centre.
