What the F*ck, Kid? is a performance that goes over the diary entries of a prepubescent kid, finding their queer identity as they grow older. The embarrassing entries shared by artist Julia Bueneman were quite nostalgic, and relatable, as everyone can recall their childhood crushes and how big of a deal it was.
There was a reason that the performance got a standing ovation from a sold out crowd — it was phenomenal. For such a simple concept of sharing your childhood diary entries (which in itself is impressive, I personally wouldn’t be able to handle the embarrassment…), Bueneman’s hilarious yet moving testimony about the trials and tribulations of growing up gives audiences the chance to reminisce over past teenaged obsessions.

Bueneman is a confident performer. To be able to take these glancing moments from their childhood and turn it into a powerful comedic performance is impressive. The show includes some small songs, and portions of singing, and the costume changes throughout perfectly match each stage of Bueneman’s childhood.
What the F*ck, Kid? explores how learning about one’s past can help open the door for self-reflection towards the future.
