Embarking on a hero’s quest, two women band together to take on an adventure that neither is quite clear about, but are sure will continue to reveal itself as they delve in. As the tale unfolds across mountain paths and with magical interventions, our leads are brought to face the ultimate challenge—reconciling your inner self and overcoming your highest mountains.

With strong themes of light and dark, a journey one must take, and magical elements, this story brought to mind fantastical stories of self discovery like The Wizard of Oz, The Neverending Story and even Lord of the Rings. An original musical, the creator has written beautiful songs built into the story telling that bring the audience into the history and promise of this magical world.

The heart and message of the show are meaningful but get lost in the technical elements. It is full of opportunity but still in the earlier stages of development. One of the reasons we love Fringe is the space it creates to workshop and adapt your show in a theatre space and with a live audience. All That Glitters will benefit from this run to tighten the story and songs a bit more and perhaps scale back on technical elements to simplify and help with allowing the actors to focus on the storytelling.

The journey to find light in the dark is a winding one, but All That Glitters shows that in the persistence to keep going, you will find your way.

All That Glitters in the Dark is playing at La Nouvelle Scène, Studio A from June 13–22. Tickets are $14 plus service fees at the Fringe box office (3rd floor, Arts Court, 2 Daly Avenue), and at the three satellite box offices (LabO in the Ottawa Art Gallery, Fringe Courtyard, 67 Nicholas St and La Nouvelle Scène).
