On Dec. 31, 1999, most people thought the world was going to end at midnight. Planes would fall out of the sky, the power grid would stop functioning, nuclear bombs would go off all at once, and much more.

What actually happened was so, so much worse.

Based on the classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel, GOREGEOUS follows the story of two orphans, Meaty and Coda, as they struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, filled with the aptly-named people eaters. Starving and seemingly close to the end, it seems their luck has finally changed when they stumble upon a house, stocked to the brim with food and everything one would need to survive the end of the world.

However, all is not what it seems with the owner of the house, and Meaty and Coda must face what could be their most dangerous situation yet.

This play is unsettling and creepy, filled with gruesomeness and zombies. The acting is absolutely phenomenal and perfectly suited for the genre, and all the actors are fully committed to their roles. Although the set is minimalist, it is chilling in its own right, with each object carefully selected to enhance the overall vibe of the play.

Unfortunately, the show I attended had to be stopped halfway through due to extenuating circumstances. However, I still recommend GOREGEOUS as a must-watch for fans of all things horror.

GOREGEOUS is playing at LabO from June 13–22. Tickets are $14 plus service fees at the Fringe box office (3rd floor, Arts Court, 2 Daly Ave.), and at the three satellite box offices (LabO in the Ottawa Art Gallery, Fringe Courtyard, 67 Nicholas St and La Nouvelle Scène). Five and ten Show Passes are also available. Visit the Ottawa Fringe Festival’s website for the show’s schedule and check out their online schedule here.
