With the end of January less than two weeks away, what better way to end the first month of 2023 than by enjoying a night of unforgettable musical performances? The place to be is Palingenesis!
Made possible thanks to a collaboration between Congrego, a local event brand whose goal is to unite people through music, art, clothing and culture, Also Cool Mag, an online music and arts publication based in Montreal and Ottawa, and Debaser, one of Ottawa’s leading independent/underground presenters, Palingenesis is proud to bring music fans a night of independent and genre-defying performances with a unique lineup of cutting-edge artists from Ottawa and beyond.

It all goes down at Allsaints church at 330 Laurier Avenue East on Saturday, January 21, from 7pm to 2am.
“It’s Congrego who’s spearheading it,” says Zoë Argiropulos-Hunter, co-founder and managing editor of Also Cool Mag. “They were the ones who sought out the venue and started with the programming and really conceptualized the name, the idea and the concept.”
Palingenesis’ biggest selling point is its lineup, which features nine musical acts:
- Artpop masters, Pony Girl
- Rapper Fraud Perry
- Treus Jones
- New three-piece electronic punk band Crasher
- Duo Ariane and Christophe as Lesser Evil
- Montreal alt-pop arist maxime. featuring his friends Lucas Kuhl on drums and James Clayton on guitar
- Tkaronto-born DJ and multidimensional artist DJ TRINIDADDY
- Local composer and sound artist Dimitri Georgaras
- DJ Russ Plus
You’ll also hear from local artists SLVR, Cheru Pompey and Andrew Doxtater.

“I think what makes it really cool is that we’ve tried to curate a lineup of artists from both our local music scene and beyond the region to Montreal,” says Argiropulos-Hunter. “We decided to work with artists who are at different points of their careers. There are some more established artists on the emerging spectrum, and then there are others who are really making waves as up-and-coming acts.”
And because Palingenesis’ lineup is not limited to a specific genre and style of music, it’s guaranteed to have something for everyone to enjoy.
“There’s so many different kinds of acts on the lineup. We have full-bodied outside bands, as well as solo artists and DJs,” says Argiropulos-Hunter. “I think that a lot of people will uncover things. Something different that they haven’t heard before.”
With such a diverse lineup, it only makes sense that the organizers would choose an event space that allows them to make the most of this unique event—a task that hasn’t been easy due to the pandemic forcing many venues to close their doors, while those that remain have become notoriously difficult to book, according to Argiropulos-Hunter.
“It’s safe to say that all the curators behind this event are really interested in programming unconventional performance spaces… We thought it would be interesting to try out and see what we could do with this space,” says Argiropulos-Hunter. “Congrego has been especially innovative in reaching out to different spaces in Ottawa and I think it really speaks to how programmers in the city can be innovative with the spaces that we do have.”
With only a few days left until Palingenesis’s debut, Argiropulos-Hunter hopes the event will remind people of just how creative Ottawa can be.
“I hope that the conception of this event serves as inspiration for others who are hoping to either curate an event themselves or perform an event [and] are interested in taking the plunge and exploring unconventional public spaces. I think it speaks to a lot of what’s to come in terms of how folks in Ottawa really revitalize what is possible… and how we can utilize what’s already here to create something entirely new.”
Palingenesis takes place at Allsaints church on Saturday, January 21, from 7 pm to 2 am. General Admission is approximately $39 and tickets can be purchased here or via Eventbrite. For more info about the Palingenesis lineup, click here.
