March’s Awesome Ottawa award goes to Frank Amisi to support a hip-hop freestyle dance battle “by the people, for the people.”
“This is a 1 vs. 1 dance battle,” explains Frank, “to celebrate the culture that is ever-growing in Ottawa. It’s also to highlight some amazing women hip-hop dancers who inspire so many around them. It’s an event where all are welcome to participate as dancers or audience, to celebrate music and dance.”
“I want to create an opportunity for dancers to celebrate themselves, compete, and share with each other,” continues Frank, “especially since last year was the 40th anniversary of hip-hop in Ottawa, and there was little acknowledgement of the dance scene here. I really want to give the dancers a much-deserved spotlight.”
The dance battle took place on April 6 at The Flava Factory. To find out about or sign up to the next dance battle, follow Frank on Instagram.
Frank is a hip-hop enthusiast, dancer, and choreographer born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He has been teaching and directing since 2018.
Awesome Ottawa is part of a global movement of self-organizing chapters forwarding the interest of awesome in the universe, $1,000 at a time. At each chapter, ten or so “trustees” each contribute $100 monthly and review short applications received online to decide on the recipient of the pooled funds — usually a local project, but occasionally a particularly awesome one far away from home. Globally, more than $6 million has already been awarded – $175,000 of that by Awesome Ottawa. For more information, visit awesomeottawa.ca.
