Weekend Roundup: Quoi faire?

Another beautiful weekend in Ottawa, and another packed roundup! The city is teeming with theatre, sports, and music this weekend, so take your pick and get exploring! The summer heat just keeps coming, so stay hydrated, and stay cool!

All Weekend

It’s the second weekend of Ottawa Chamberfest, and there are shows and special events all weekend. They are offering midday matinées, evening shows, and hours and hours of livestreamed content as well! Single event tickets for the concerts begin at $35, and the events are taking place in different venues across town.

A Company of Fools continues to tour the city’s parks with their interpretation of Hamlet. Bring a chair, a friend, and some snacks to catch them Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this weekend. The pay-what-you-can show runs only 90 minutes, and begins at 7pm each evening.


Kanata Theatre presents its annual 10-Minute Play Festival, featuring seven new plays by local playwrights, on stage Friday and Saturday. General admission tickets are available at the door, and it is cash only, pay what you can (suggested donation 10$). Read all about it in our recent preview here.

Odyssey Theatre Under the Stars is opening their season this weekend with Molière’s comedic masterpiece, The Miser. Don’t miss this original adaptation of Molière’s brilliant satire of the timeless themes of greed, corruption, and love. You can find the outdoor stage in Strathcona Park from July 27 to August 20. Odyssey’s renowned Theatre Under the Stars series is known for its signature performances featuring Commedia dell’Arte, mask, physical theatre, clown and puppetry. Tickets for opening weekend are 50% off (that brings tickets for kids under 12 down to $7.72), making it a great show for the family. Read our in house review here!

The Big Bounce Canada is wrapping up this weekend at Saunders Farm, so it is your last chance to check out the world’s largest bouncy castle! There are sessions for families, small children, and adults. Adult tickets start at $55 for three hours of bouncing. There are different courses to try, slides, and DJs to keep it going!

Festibière Gatineau wraps up Saturday evening, so if you haven’t checked out the colourful beer festival, this is your last chance! Get tickets for the weekday evening sessions, or take in some sun Saturday afternoon. Tickets start at $19.95, and be sure to get them online ahead of time.


Thursday

Landsdowne Movie Nights on the Great Lawn are bringing Doolittle to the big screen Thursday evening, beginning at dusk (approximately 8:30). The movie is free to attend, so bring a chair and some snacks to enjoy. In case of rain, the movie moves indoors to the Aberdeen Pavilion.

Friday

Art House is the place to catch their monthly Fever Pitch Hot Jazz show Friday from 8:30 to 11pm. This ticketed, speakeasy-style night has limited seating, so get your tickets online in advance for $10 each.

The RedBlacks are home this weekend, celebrating our 1973 Ottawa Roughriders Grey Cup win with Legacy Night. Kick off is 7:30pm, and if all goes well, we could break into a winning record!

Every Friday night you can enjoy Music in the Park at Dundonald Park on Somerset featuring a roster of rotating local talent. This week, beginning at 6:30pm you can take in the jazz saxophone stylings of the Doug Martin Trio. The event is free to attend, weather permitting!

Saturday

In need of a new summer beach read? The Friends of the Ottawa Public Library are holding their Mammoth Book Sale on Saturday at the City of Ottawa Archives on Tallwood Drive in Nepean. From 10am–2pm you can check out books, DVDs, and CDs for all ages. The sale is free to attend, so bring your biggest tote bag to fill.

The second annual Propagations for Abolition event will take place at Arlington Five Café on Saturday from 10am to 4pm, raising funds for Criminalization and Punishment Education Project (CPEP) and Prisoners’ Justice Day initiatives. The event will feature the sale of a variety of plant cuttings and CPEP merch. There will also be a raffle featuring prizes from a variety of local artists and businesses.

Atlético Ottawa are taking on Cavalry FC Saturday evening at 7pm. The last time Ottawa played Cavalry, we took all three points, despite Cavalry’s place at the top of the league standings. The first 500 fans to arrive get a free copy of the collectible Match Day Programme.

The ByWard Night Market is happening Saturday evening, with vendors, street food, a mobile bar, and live music along York Street.

Sunday

Get ready to experience  the Thai Street Food Festival 2023! Taking place on Sunday at the Horticulture Building from 11am to 6pm, the festival is free to attend with optional registration. Presented by the Royal Thai Embassy, there will be lots of food from different local vendors, as well as some authentic Thai arts and crafts to peruse.
Looking for some nature to explore? The Friends of Petrie Island are holding Turtle Day on Sunday from 10am–1pm. Learn about the turtles at Petrie Island and the research being done to keep them safe and healthy. There will be activities for the kids, and the event is free to attend, of course.
