Spanish flamenco artist Israel Galván has been called a genius and revolutionary choreographer. Known for mixing rapid-fire steps, intricate movements and stillness in his performances, the Seville-born dancer has been hailed the world over for his work.

Local audiences now have a chance to see him first-hand when he performs at the National Arts Centre on Tuesday, March 18.

“I’ve had the great fortune of seeing a number of Galván’s works in various cities, and I’m thrilled that we were able to bring La Edad de Oro  (The Golden Age) for his first Ottawa appearance,” says Cathy Levy, executive producer of dance at the NAC, in a statement.  “Israel has been hailed as a genius and with good reason: his unique flamenco choreography reveals intricate and complicated rhythms and gestures that are ground-breaking in their approach.”

Performed all over the world more than 200 times, La Edad de Oro brings together Galván’s exquisite avant-garde footwork, with the musical accompaniment of brothers David and Alfredo Lagos.   (David sings; Alfredo plays the guitar).

With dance, vocals and guitar, the trio encompass the traditional elements of flamenco on the modern stage.

If you are a lover of dance and/or flamenco, or simply want to see art at its finest, this is a show to see.

Israel Galván performs La Edad de Oro at the NAC Theatre on March 18 at 7:30 pm.  Tickets start at $39.
