My bucket list includes one item that may take some time to fulfill. The likelihood of me visiting India in the near future is remote.
Fortunately, I can start my journey to India with a taster, by attending Ottawa’s 5th annual Festival of India.
Opening on Friday August 5th, 2016 and running until Sunday night August 7th, the cultural event is an exciting and fun family-friendly festival that has something for everybody of all ages and backgrounds.
Dr. Bala Brahmanandam Madaparthi, the Festival’s President, believes “the planning and preparation by the many volunteers has resulted in several very exciting programs for this year.”
If you’re a fan of Indian cuisine, the Festival has a special offering, as Dr Madaparthi is quick to point out.
“This year, the food will be freshly prepared onsite. One certainly would be hard pressed to find meals as delicious as what we will serve at the festival anywhere in Ottawa”.
This year’s program includes dance and puppetry performances, cooking demos, yoga workshops, a cricket demo, a panel discussion, and the joyously colourful Holi.
“There is something for everyone. The festival will both entertain and educate, by showcasing the heritage and rich culture of India”, Dr Madaparthi said.
The main stage entertainment will include performances by Jordan John, DesiSUBculture, and Raghu Dixit Project, India’s biggest cultural and musical folk band.
The festival will take place at Marion Dewar Plaza, 110 Laurier Avenue West, (Ottawa City Hall). The full program is available online, as are tickets. For more information, see their Facebook page.
The Festival is also still seeking volunteers in all areas, including the Green Team, which assists in keeping the festival clean and environmentally friendly. You can register online.
