Blogging Bluesfest 2013: Brock Zeman

By François Levesque on June 30, 2013

Brock Zeman is far from being a newbie to the music scene, the roots man from Lanark is on his 9th album in ten years and has been on the touring circuit for the last decade, easily doing a hundred plus shows a year. Often compared to Fred Eaglesmith, Zeman’s  song  writing has been praised by many including Exclaim!, Lynn Miles  and Keith Glass of Prairie Oyster. By Sylvie Hill’s Twitter account he’s the dreamiest man in all of the Ottawa Valley, and a must see live. On why he started Mud Records, a few years ago:

“I like good songs.

Good songs can be found in dark places.

Good songs can be played on bad guitars.

Good songs can be written by bad people.

Good songs can get you through anything.

Good songs breathe and bleed.

Good songs keep me going.

I made Mud Records because I like good songs.”

Brock took a few minutes to answer our questions, before taking off for the Canada Day long weekend.

How would you describe your sound?

I stopped trying….rock, singer/songwriter, roots.

When did the band start?

My first record “Cold Winter Comes Back” came out 10 years ago.

What are you hoping from your Bluesfest performance?

How much noise three people can make.

If you could develop a Suzy Q donut, what flavour would it be?

Don’t even know what a Suzy Q donut is…..

Well, maybe I shouldn’t have asked that last one to a Valley Boy. Perhaps I should bring him a Maple Bacon donut pre-show? Here’s a video from Brock at the Gibson Austin Backroom Bootlegs.

Brock Zeman plays the Barney Danson Theatre Thursday, July 4th at 7:30pm.
