This weekend, we’ve got a musical shattering blonde stereotypes, a festival dedicated to all things steeped, and a night celebrating all things Africa. We’re also giving away tickets to a show at Raw Sugar – read on for more details!
Support Local month continues, with the latest installment of Apt613 Talks tonight down at Shopify. Ever wondered when you’ll be able to start printing off replacement car parts or create a perfect replica of your pet? It might be sooner than you think – our panelists will discuss the future of printing and creating tonight.
Friday is a busy evening for Support Local. The Holiday Assembly is happening down at the Museum of Nature, as part of the Nature Nocturne series. There will be workshops, crafters, makers, dancing and DJs – it will be the most hopping craft show you’ve ever attended. Clare Brebner’s work also launches at 25One community, and 9th Hour Theatre Company is having their annual fundraiser down at the GCTC. Kichesippi’s Tap(e) Takeover is happening down at Mugshots, too – they’ll be taking over the taps, while the guys from the Bruised Tongue label will take over the tapes.
Saturday, it’s the Apartment613 Local Authors Fair – more than 20 authors covering all sorts of genres and language will be down at the Main Branch of the library to sell and sign books. There are also craft sales galore the rest of the weekend – a bonanza at the Bronson Centre, a fair down in Hintonburg, shopping local talent in Old Ottawa South, Savoir Faire out in Aylmer, and the de-stash continues at Flock Boutique.
Save some energy for Monday, too, because there’s a vernissage and band night down at town restaurant!
Out at the Black Sheep this evening, you’ll find Evening Hymns and Andy Shauf. Ranking Yout and the Dub Pilots are bringing their reggae sounds back, while the Mercury Lounge presents the return of Bet.e and Stef. Friday night Bloody Diamonds stop by Avant-Garde on their way from Halifax, while Poor Young Things are at Cafe Dekcuf with Bronson Novella and Port Manteau on Saturday night. Also on Saturday, Swollen Eyes play the Black Pepper Pub down in Hintonburg.
If you’re hoping to catch the Justice R.F. and special guests Creature Speak show at Raw Sugar, you’re in luck. It’s the first-ever show booked by indie music gurus Ottawa Showbox, and to celebrate, they’re giving away a pair of tickets. Just leave a comment below by Friday at noon with the indie band you’d like to see them book sometime in the future, and you’ll be entered in the draw!
There are enough fundraisers to keep you going all weekend long, too. Beautiful Bums takes the cake for catchiest name, happening for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. Pampered in Pink is all about breast cancer research, while Timeraiser raises volunteer time for local not-for-profits.
The documentary Generation Jobless will be shown down at the Hub on Thursday. If that’s a little too depressing, you can catch comedian Mark Forward this weekend, whose stand-up will have you rolling in the aisles.
