2016 is in full swing and while we (and our bank accounts) recover from the busy holiday season, why not get out and enjoy some fresh air and free activities?
If you haven’t been to one of Ottawa’s free museums or galleries in a while, check out #popscope, happening tonight at the National Gallery of Canada. Ottawa Popscope aims to connect individuals within a community through pop up astronomy nights. And just because it’s winter doesn’t mean the stargazing has to stop. Wander through the NGC then take a look through a telescope – you never know what you’ll see!
While we wait for the Rideau Canal to open, it’s easy to get your fill of skating this weekend. The Rink of Dreams at City Hall is in just the perfect spot to tempt you with views of the canal – skate a few loops then grab yourself a beavertail and hot chocolate. If you haven’t been to the Skating Court at Lansdowne Park, make sure you bring along your skates to the Ottawa Farmers’ Winter Market Sunday at Aberdeen Pavilion. Stock up on local goods then hit the ice!
Also happening this weekend is the Governor General’s Winter Celebration at Rideau Hall on Saturday. You are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Ottawa Food Bank and Moisson Outaouais or winter clothing for the Snowsuit Fund, then take advantage of all the goings-on! The outdoor rink will be open and there will be dogsledding and horse-drawn sleigh rides.
On Friday, Three Times Lucky and Melwood Cutlery play Blacksheep Inn. Missed Justin Bieber night last weekend? Saturday night is your chance to groove to another Canadian celebrity – Drake night with DJs Laocapone, Frank Play & Matt Tamblyn is this Saturday at Babylon.
Also on Saturday, Kitchen Party 49, a monthly dance party with roots in Little Italy, is on at Flapjack’s. Join Djs Hobo and Sweet Cheeks at this pancake sandwich food truck – turned local hangout to dance the night away to funk, soul, disco, hip hop, electro, house, techno and everything in between!
Looking for your punk thrash fix? DBC (Dead Brain Cells), MUTANK, Ominous Eclipse and ENTRENCHED will be playing at House of Targ.
There’s a first time for everything and this is your chance to take it in as a group of improvisers, actors and standups attempt to create, write and rehearse an entire sketch revue in only 24 hours. Presented by EFT-up Comedy, The Short-Notice Sketch Show is on at Pressed tonight!

Janvier prend définitivement son envol culturel avec la 35e édition de Contact Ontarois qui se poursuivra jusqu’à ce vendredi 15 janvier. Il s’agit d’un événement hors pair pour mettre en valeur les arts de la scène francophone en Ontario. La formule “vitrine” permet de profiter d’une multitude d’artistes en prestation dans les domaines de la danse, de l’humour, du théâtre et de la musique. De ce côté, 9 artistes performeront chaque soir dans les salles du Centre des Arts Shenkman à Orléans. Parmi les artistes, nous retrouvons Pandaléon, Joseph Edgar, Gazoline, Big Balade! Les billets sont en vente sur le site du MIFO.
Vendredi, le Pressed Cafe propose une soirée où la pop sera l’honneur. Trois bands se succéderont pour réanimer les âmes congelées : Twist (Toronto), So Young (London) et Trails (Ottawa). Soyez-y dès 20h!
La luxuriante formation Esmerine formée par Bruce Cawdron (Godpseed You! Black Emperor) et la violoncelliste Rebecca Foon (Thee Silver Mt. Zion) sera de passage ce vendredi à Chelsea au Mill Road Community Space. De la musique de chambre des temps modernes qui allie des formules post-rock à ses compositions. Le groupe multiplie les collaborations avec des artistes de renom. Ce spectacle s’annonce comme un incontournable du weekend.
Samedi soir, l’Orchestre du CNA nous présente une autre édition des Wolfgang Sessions. Le Mercury Lounge sera l’hôte de cet événement multidisciplinaire et quasi musico-révolutionnaire. Un beau mélange de musique classique jouée par l’Orchestre du CNA, le tout agrémenté d’une touche de DJs expérimentés. Ah! Et il y a des vidéastes sur place qui s’occupent des projections. Un tout qui impressionne.
Samedi encore – l’instant d’un moment – la chaude ambiance des Kitchen Party du Rochester Pub revivra au Flapjack Pancakes Shack. Les Djs Hobo & Sweet Cheeks assureront une continuité musicale tout en funk-soul-disco-hip hop-electro-house-techno. Y participer c’est contribuer à éterniser la légende ottavienne!
