With the news this week that the Rideau Canal Skateway has closed for the season and warmer temperatures in the forecast, it feels like we’re slowly but surely making our way towards spring. This weekend we’ve got an exciting mix of St. Patrick’s Day festivities and March break activities.

All Weekend

The Ottawa Little Theatre presents The Shawshank Redemption until March 15. Check out our review here and get your tickets online.

Heart and Crown is hosting a series of events leading up to St. Patrick’s Day at their locations in the ByWard Market, on Preston Street, in Barrhaven, as well as at the Aulde Dubliner & Pour House.

Test your luck with an escape room challenge this weekend: find the hidden shamrocks in one of Escape Manor’s rooms and enjoy a treat from the pot of gold!

The Bytown Museum is open for three days (March 13, 14, and 15) during its off season for your chance to check out some of Ottawa’s history. Admission is by donation.

The International Film Festival of Ottawa runs March 12-23. Check out the schedule here and learn more about the festival in our article here.

It’s the perfect time of year to visit a sugar shack. There are plenty throughout the region to get your fix of maple syrup!

For kids and kids at heart, the ByTowne Cinema has the perfect way to spend an afternoon: Looney Tunes Cartoon Party.

Catch The Princess Bride on the big screen at the ByTowne Cinema during a March break showing from 1-3:30pm.

Sing a sea shanty at the Heart and Crown – ByWard Market with the Bytown Sea Shanty Collective.

One of the most interesting parts of Ottawa Gigs’ Ottawa Music Wrapped 2024 was seeing the huge number of events that take place at the Rainbow Bistro. If you haven’t caught a show there yet, why not check out A Short Walk to Pluto + Out By Lucy + Futura Free?

Avant-Garde Bar is hosting a St. Paddy’s Day Bash on Friday with Sno Daze, Upstairs Neighbours, and Whiskey River Fever starting at 8pm.

Cadence Weapon is at the National Arts Centre on Friday night.

Enjoy the best pop, dance, and hip hop hits of the 2000’s at House of TARG’s Dance Mix 2000.

The Ottawa 67s take on the Oshawa Generals Friday at 7pm.

Saturday

Rediscover the music of Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle with Ottawa Pops Orchestra’s Ghibli Symphony.

Every third Saturday is Emo Night at the 27 Club. You can grab your ticket online.

The Bytown Sea Shanty Collective is having a busy weekend with a second sing along this weekend. Head to Beyond the Pale on Saturday for their free event.

Teet 4 Teet is a queer country drag party with burlesque performers Miss Patience Plush, Kay Kalish, and Rhapsody Blue, drag performers Shebiscuit, Holli Cow, and Rip Em, and DJs Hug Mosh and Esme2K. Tickets are available online.

If you’re near the ByWard Market on Saturday, don’t miss one of three shows by skilled aerialists taking flight.

The Ottawa Charge take on the Boston Fleet Saturday afternoon at the Arena at TD Place.

Ottawa’s new lacrosse team, the Ottawa Black Bears, play the Rochester Knighthawks on Saturday at 3pm at the Canadian Tire Centre.

Sunday

Every other Sunday, Heart and Crown – ByWard Market has live Irish music from 1-4pm. I think it’s safe to say it’ll be a popular event this round!

Head to House of TARG’s free play Sunday for unlimited game play on 40+ pinball machines and classic arcade games.

The Ottawa 67s have their second home game this weekend, going up against the Kingston Frontenacs on Sunday at 2pm.

Bonus Monday! St. Patrick’s Day

In addition to the weekend-long activities already mentioned, there’ll be plenty of celebrations in the bars and pubs across town on Monday. Wherever you end up for your pint of Guinness, be safe and have fun! Sláinte!
