After a messy week, it looks like the weather will clear up just in time to enjoy the goings-on this weekend. There is plenty to do around town, so get out and enjoy yourselves, folks!

All Weekend

The spring edition of Pique takes place at Arts Court this weekend. This edition of Pique features exhibitions and performances from a wide variety of artists, “bringing together club futurism, intercultural ambient-electronic, jazz-hop vanguardism, vocal experimentation, leftfield pop music, drag brilliance, soft sculpture installation, and lots more.” There will also be a collection of workshops and panel discussions held over the weekend.

The Canadian Museum of History is hosting something a little different this weekend; come experience the incredible aerial acts of ChonoSpectacle: A Time Traveller’s Circus. There is both a morning and afternoon show on Friday, as well as a morning show on Sunday.

Want to spend some time outdoors this weekend and learn something new while getting some fresh air? Sign up for Animal Tracking on Snowshoes in Gatineau Park on Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon! This two hour hike is a free activity with snowshoes provided. The caveat is that you need to be able to speak French, as there is no availability left for the English speaking time slots.

Ottawa Little Theatre is continuing its run of The Shawshank Redemption all weekend. This highly rated show is sure to move you, so read all about it in our review here.

Thursday

Rideau Rollers is hosting a masked Roller Disco at Next Door Ottawa on Thursday eve. DJ Del Pilar will be spinning some great disco tunes sure to get you moving and grooving. Tickets can be purchased online for $25 and include the rental of your roller skates.

Friday

Performing this Friday night at the National Arts Centre is Canadian singer and multi-instrumentalist Basia Bulat. In preparation for the show, why not check out her newest album, Basia’s Palace, which was released this February.

If you are looking for some new pieces to decorate your walls, you’ll want to head over to the Vintage Poster Exhibition & Sale at Ottawa Bike Cafe on Sparks Street this Friday. There will be all sorts of original posters from the 60s, 70s, and 80s for sale, as well as some tasty cocktails and live music to enjoy while you peruse. Plus 100% of door ticket sales will be donated to Highjinx.

There will be a Feminist Film Screening & Critique at Next Door Ottawa this Friday night. The screening of The Glorias begins at 7pm, followed by a critique by Tish Black. Be sure to bring your own chair/blanket/pillow – whatever will make you cozy – and settle in for a fun night. There will be drinks and snacks for sale onsite, including Nonna’s Pizza.

Celebrate the arrival of the weekend with an 80s Dance Party at House of Targ, brought to you by DJ Remi Royale and The Underground. The Underground will start the night playing two back-to-back sets of songs from the 80s New Wave era; then DJ Remi Royale will take over, with some great 80s tunes that are sure to make you dance.

Saturday

Opening this Saturday at the Ottawa Art Gallery is Grotto – The Bill Staubi Collection. The show features a collection of works donated to the gallery by Bill Staubi, which “delve into themes of queer identity, community-building, and activism, offering a powerful exploration of human connection.”

Celebrate International Women’s Day by supporting local women-led businesses at the Femme Fest International Women’s Day Market at Next Door Ottawa this Saturday from 11am to 5pm. There will be live entertainment, workshops, and a market of awesome goodies.

Back at it again is 613Flea in the Aberdeen Pavilion at Lansdowne this Saturday. As always, entry to this market of 150+ vendors is free and there will be a ton of tasty treats available for you to snack on while you shop.

Sunday

An After Dark edition of Free Play Sunday will take place from 8pm to midnight at House of Targ this Sunday. Over 40 pinball machines will be set to free play and there will be music by DJ KJMAXX, DJ Ska Jeff, and DJ b-RAD to set the mood. Toss in some delicious perogies and you’ve got yourself a good time.

Sunday afternoon is the opening of the Gladstone’s newest attraction, A Wintertime Music Festival! Catch local talent from all kinds of genres in the week long festival.  ‘Back To Our Roots” is a lively matinee at 1pm that celebrates traditional music through compelling performances of three extraordinary artists, each representing a unique genre: jazz, traditional folk and gospel. At 7pm you can take in the smooth stylings of the Juno Award-winning Angelique Francis Band.
