And just like that, it’s October and the beginning of fall and spooky season. The temperatures have started to drop a bit, but it’s still plenty nice out to enjoy the beginnings of the fall colours, some Oktoberfest events, and a growing list of spooky nights. Festival of Small Halls is back this weekend for some stellar concerts in small halls around the Ottawa Valley. This weekend you can catch Ron Sexsmith in Spencerville, Sarah Harmer in Almonte and Kellylee Evans in Elgin Ont., just to name a few. Get your tickets online, and get ready to road trip.

Paper Moon Theatre Company is bringing Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street to the NAC stage this weekend only. The gruesome, thrilling and darkly comedic Stephen Sondheim show has a huge fan following, and has thrilled our in-house threatre writers who interviewed the play’s lead actor for an exclusive look back stage here. Tickets are still available starting at $89.
Aren’t we lucky that every weekend we get a fair? This weekend find the midway and livestock at the Metcalfe Fair until Sunday. A one day pass for adults of $15 in advance, and you can buy your tickets online. Spooky Season
Spooky season is upon us, and this weekend there are a few different places you can go for your fright fix. Saunder Farm’s Frightfest is open this weekend with the haunted wagon ride, and multiple scary haunted and macabre houses in Munster. They are also offering regular fall fun at Pumpkin Fest, running during the day with mazes, games, and pumpkins of course. Acres of Terror at Cannamore Orchards in Crysler is offering 15 per cent off of it’s terror this weekend. You have to get all your spooky tickets online in advance! Both experiences are open during the day for more family friendly spooks, and into the night when it gets really scary.

Haunted Walks are offering special “paranormal investigations” at Billings Bridge Estate National Heritage Site, Cumberland Heritage Village Museum and other cool haunts further afield. You can also take a Haunted Heritage Tour of Main Street Stittsville Thursday-Sunday. Learn more about Stittsville’s past, with all the hauntings of a rural village.
The incredible Pumpkinferno is happening again at Upper Canada Village, if flaming pumpkins is more your style. The Kiwanis Club of Orleans is hosting their annual fundraising scare sKreamers at Proulx Farm, including two haunted houses and a wagon ride, if you’d like to do some good while you scream.
Friday
Friday is the final evening of subDevision 2024 at Arts Court. The theatre festival experience is one of a kind, and you can read all about it in an article we wrote about it here. Pay-what-you-can tickets are available online.
Saturday
Capital Pop-Up Cinema is closing out their season with a spooky double bill at Beechwood Cemetery Saturday evening at dusk. The show will begin with Chamberfest violinist accompaniment to the 1899 silent film Cinderella, followed by the 1954 horror classic, Creature From the Black Lagoon. This is a very cool experience, so pack up your snacks, your blankets and get there early. The movie is always free, and the popcorn is cheap!
613flea is back at the Aberdeen Pavillion on Saturday from 10am-4pm. Keep your eyes peeled for cozy vintage threads, and fun fall baking and décor.
Saturday and Sunday check out the Chelsea Wakefield Studio Tour. Over the last two weekends we can enjoy paintings, sculpture, functional and decorative ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, photography and glass, all around Chelsea and Wakefield. The tour is free to follow from 10am-5pm both days.
The Ottawa Family Cinema is showing Harold and the Purple Crayon on the big screen. Advance tickets for members are $5, and $7 at the door for the volunteer-run theatre.
The 2024 ART+ Fall Showcase by the Multiculturalism Artist’s Coalition is happening from 4-7 at Arts Court. The evening of art, music, dance and live performances will feature a variety of local creators and artists. Admission is $10 at the door.
Sunday
The Panda Game is happening this Sunday at noon, for all you students and alumni concerned. The game is nearly sold out, but there are still seats to be had on the Carleton North Side of the stands at TD Place. This classic Ravens vs Gee-Gees matchup should be a good one, and if you aren’t interested in attending, it’s good to know that the Glebe will be party central all day.
Check out the Spooktacular Craft Market at the Glebe Community Centre for over 50 local vendors selling their seasonal goodies. Entrance is free and the event runs from 10:30am to 3pm.
FemmeVox6 is a live music event happening at the Great Canadian Theatre Company Sunday at 8pm, featuring four awesome musicians: Tara Holloway, Catriona Sturton, Empress Nyiringango, and Naviger. Sliding scale tickets are available online for the show from $15 to $35.
The Bytowne is doing something very cool and spooky on Sunday at 9pm with their unique Silent Synced event that couples F.W. Murnau’s century old masterpiece Nosferatu with Radiohead’s mind-blowing “Kid A” (2000) and “Amnesiac” (2001) albums. The silent Nosferatu is unsettling enough, but with those vocals coming at you? Very creepy and very cool. Get your tickets online.
