Weekend Roundup: Quoi faire?

Break out the stretchy pants and walking shoes Ottawa! The summer is in full swing with food festivals, yoga festivals, film festivals, and shopping festivals (okay, that last one is a bit of a stretch…).

All Weekend

Doors Open Ottawa is the largest architectural and heritage event in the city where you have a chance to visit some of the city’s most beautiful buildings. Note that some locations require pre-registration online.

The Ottawa Chinatown Night Market is a three day event on Somerset Street West between Bronson Avenue and Bell Street with a variety of food, multicultural performances, live music, martial arts, and more!

Also this weekend is the Ottawa Asian Fest night market, debuting at Tanger Outlets this weekend.

People have been raving about Jagged Little Pill, the Broadway Across Canada musical inspired by the Alanis Morissette album by the same name. Check out Apt613’s review here.

The Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC)’s Lawyer Play fundraiser takes place this weekend with The Visit by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, directed by Patrick Gauthier. The Lawyer Play fundraiser supports GCTC programs, and this year will also support Belong Ottawa. Belong Ottawa helps people who are precariously housed or homeless through programs that provide safe spaces to connect people and create community. Their programs offer meals, laundry, showers and other support systems. Tickets to the show are still available for three evening performances June 1–3 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $125 each and are eligible for a tax receipt of $75.

Propeller Dance Ottawa presents THIS IS HAPPENING, a world premiere National Arts Centre Co-Production with Stopgap Dance Company (UK). This is a unique, dramatic dance production in which the audience is invited backstage as dancers prepare for and then present a show. Tickets are available online for the shows June 1 and June 3 at LabO Theatre (60 Waller St). Note that ASL and audio description option available for June 3 show only. Accessible drop off location for Para Transpo is at 10 Daly Avenue.

City of Om, Ottawa’s yoga and wellness festival, is back this weekend at Lansdowne. Tickets and the full schedule are available online.

Thursday

The Ottawa Music Industry Coalition presents the 4th Annual Capital Music Awards on June 1 from 8-10pm live at the Bronson Centre.

Westboro Village BIA presents Shop the Village on June 1 from 6-9 pm in the Churchill and Athlone block of Richmond Road. Enjoy an evening of entertainment, shopping, and delight.

Friday

The Statistics Canada Choir is hosting a fundraising concert “MusiCINEMA“, a tribute to film music and others. The net proceeds from ticket sales of this benefit concert will go the Dalhousie Food Cupboard.

JazzWorks presents an evening of jazzy funk-fusion and soul music with A.T.N. Stadwijk, keyboardist, arranger, and producer, accompanied by Sage Reynolds on bass and Michel Delage on drums, featuring Richard Page on saxophones and flute. The show takes place this Friday at 7:30pm at KaTO Restaurant (1170 chemin d’Aylmer in Gatineau).

Emerging local filmmaker Lisetty Sandoval’s film Penelope’s Story will premiere at the Latin American Film Festival on Friday June 2 at 6pm at the Saint Paul University Amphitheatre (110 Hazel Street). The film focuses on the rebirth of a victim of sex trafficking, and the protagonist’s pursuit mirrors the filmmaker’s own journey in overcoming mental abuse. Tickets are available online.

Saturday

Ontario-born, Nova Scotia-based indie folk artist Daniel James McFadyen at Club SAW in Ottawa this Saturday, joined by Ottawa musician Riley Burns. Daniel just released his new single “Sunshine”, the lead track off his forthcoming EP.

Get ready for a hilarious night of comedy with Single Ladies, a stand-up comedy show featuring an all-female lineup! Headlined by Michaela Chung and some of the best female comedians in Ottawa. June 3, 10pm, Yuk’s Yuk’s Ottawa West (1394 Richmond Road).

The City of Ottawa and yoga partners are hosting full moon yoga this summer at Lansdowne. Catch the first of the series, cohosted with City of Om, this Saturday from 9-10pm on the Great Lawn.

The 8th edition of the Vanier VeloFest is taking place this Saturday morning. There’ll be a bike rodeo and information about simple bike repair.

Sunday

Sofar Sounds is hosting a show with the Tontine Awards on Sunday evening at 7:30pm somewhere in Hintonburg (the location will be revealed to ticket-holders 36 hours in advance). Sofar shows are secret concerts held in intimate venues and feature three different acts, each with their own unique musical style. The Tontine Awards are a microgrant program that helps local women explore their talents and express their creativity. Tickets are $21 and are available here.
