From January 17-29 the Great Canadian Theatre Company presents As You Like It: A Radical Retelling, a (you guessed it!) radical interpretation of Shakespeare’s play from Cliff Cardinal, creator of Huff and Stitch. Learn all about the show in our preview post here.
Emerging Canadian Métis artist Ruby Waters plays two shows at Club SAW on Saturday (already sold out) and Sunday. Tickets are $25.72, and doors open at 8pm. Waters’ song “Sweet Sublime” went viral on Reddit and last year her EP If It Comes Down To It was nominated for a Juno for Alternative Album of the Year.
Sky Dancers: Honouring Strength and Resilience in the Community of Kahnawake plays at the National Arts Centre (NAC) from January 19–21. Learn about the performance in an interview with Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo the show’s artistic director and choreographer of A’nó:wara Dance Theatre.
This weekend is your final chance to experience Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel exhibition at the EY Centre. For a really unique experience, book yourself a ticket for Sunday’s yoga session in the exhibition.
Thursday
Many of the local museums were closed last week for annual maintenance (to do things like clean the skeleton of a great blue whale or dust tanks) but they’re open again for free admission on Thursday evening. Be sure to double check your destination before heading there for admission details and times.
Practice your Irish this Thursday evening at Brigid’s Well, the pub hidden in the basement of Saint Brigid’s Centre for the Arts. The pub is open Wednesday to Saturday from 4pm-late. Dominion City Brewing Co. is hosting a few dry January cocktail workshops this weekend: one on Thursday at 7pm, then at 3:30pm and 7pm on Saturday. DCBC’s City Seltzer line is teaming up with Knyota Non-Alcoholic Drinks to present the sessions where participants can learn how to create classy mocktails led by mixologist Tristan Bragaglia-Murdock.

Spirit of Rasputin’s, Ottawa’s folk music society, welcomes back The Toasted Westerns: Jody Benjamin (lead singer, guitar, percussion), Ann Downey (singer, bass, banjo) and Sally Robinson (singer, piano, clarinet, accordion). for a performance Saturday at 2pm at the Westboro Masonic Hall.
Axé WorldFest presents Polky, Canada’s women-led Eastern European folk band playing live at the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage. Polky brings its original sound to Eastern European traditional music by adding a uniquely Canadian and multicultural flavour. Tickets are available online from $23.
Yarns and Raphael Weinroth-Browne will play a show at Cafe Dekcuf Saturday night.
Arts Court is home to an Art Battle Saturday at 7pm.
Montréal-based baroque ensemble Les Barocudas will perform at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre as part of the Ottawa Chamberfest. Tickets available online.
