Welcome to another October weekend roundup! Fall is showing itself across the National Capital Region and rain or shine, there’s plenty to do this long weekend.
All Weekend
Saunders Farm is set to celebrate their 31st haunting season, with family friendly pumpkin days and evening FrightFest at the farm in Munster. Enjoy an extra day of cycling with NCC Weekend Bikedays this long weekend. And make it count: Thanksgiving Monday is the final day for most closures this season. Take a look at the Gatineau Park schedule before heading in to check out the fall colours. Speaking of fall colours…
The National Capital Commission is once again offering a free shuttle into Gatineau Park so you can experience Fall Rhapsody. The shuttle will depart from the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, accessible via the Pimisi LRT station on the Confederation Line, and the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, with stops at Pink Lake, the Mackenzie King Estate, and Champlain Lookout.
OFF Zones Théâtrales runs October 5–7 at La Nouvelle Scène Gilles Desjardins: the program includes four free readings and a playwrights’ panel. Among the featured playwrights are Charlotte L’Orage, Alain Doom and Marie-Claire Marcotte. Tickets available online for the readings, which include La Befana Thursday at 2pm; Thomas Lortie Thursday at 6pm; and, Bros/Les Gars Friday at 2pm. Later Friday, there’s a public session with playwrights Adeline Flaun (Martinique), Cédric Mabudu (Benin), Marie-Claire Marcotte (Toronto), André Gélineau (Sherbrooke) followed by a performance of Pacific Palisade, presented by Théâtre du Trillium.
The Festival of Small Halls kicks off this weekend. The festival runs for the first three weekends in October, with shows from Almonte to Tweed, Balderson to Westmeath.
Thursday
On October 6, Stephane Wrembel and several other local musicians will be performing his style of jazz at Red Bird Cafe, and the following evening he will offer a guitar workshop at the same venue. Learn more in our post here.
Friday
Pro Kitchen is celebrating five years of shared kitchen space with a birthday pop up, including treats from Hungry Babe and Michael’s Dolce.
The Multicultural Artists’ Coalition ART+ Fall Showcase 2022 is taking place Saturday from 4-7pm at Club SAW and Library Studio. The event will showcase and celebrate equity, diversity, inclusion and pluralism in the arts, including local artists from all Western and non-Western art disciplines. The lineup of local artists and artists groups includes Yulia Lisitsyna (Visual Arts), Tamiris Paes Souza (Violin), Esmeraldas de Colombia (Colombian Dance), Stuti Mukherjee (Indian Dance), Lubna Moussa (Visual Arts), Jack Tzekov (Visual Arts), Camila Reimers (Visual Arts), Bonita Eloise Ford (Performance), Christina Tzekova (Visual Arts), NortNsur (Music). Tickets are by donation and pre-registration is required.
Ottawa Quad Session Rollerskating is hosting their weekly Friday social at Norm Fenn Gym at Carleton University.
West Carleton Arts Society‘s “Expressions of Art” show has been held annually for more than 25 years and is currently presented at the Carp Agricultural Hall. This exhibition and sale showcases the creative talents of more than 30 top artists from the Ottawa region, all selected through a formal, independent jurying process. The vernissage is Friday from 7-9pm and will feature live music by Natalie Hoffman, food, and a cash bar. Entrance to the show is free and there is plenty of free parking. The venue is fully accessible.
Saturday
In partnership with the City of Ottawa’s Cultural Funding Unit, the Multicultural Artists’ Coalition is hosting ART+ Workshop: grant writing tips for the City of Ottawa’s Cultural funding programs. Open to fall artists in the National Capital Region, the workshop will provide an overview of the City of Ottawa’s cultural funding programs. Participants will learn how to prepare a grant application, receive writing tips and gain a better understanding of how applications are evaluated. Register online.
The Carp Farmers’ Market is hosting a 75+ local vendors at the Carp Fairgrounds from 8am-1pm. The weekly market has live music, 100% local vendors, free admission, is pet friendly, and open rain or shine. This weekend, Cheff Fields Farm will be bringing alpacas! In partnership with Inuuqatigiit Centre for Inuit Families, the Vanier Hub will be hosting its first ever Inuit Olympics from 11am-3pm at 271 Marier Avenue. From 11am-12pm there will be a feast and game registration period for players, and from 12-3pm there will be game leaders who will be leading different traditional Inuit games.
