What will it be this weekend, Ottawa? Burlesque? A crowd-sourced musical bike ride? Fashion?
House of PainT kicked off last night, and goes on all weekend long to celebrate their 10th anniversary. If you haven’t caught their Bboy and Bgirl breakdancing competition in years past, be sure to head down under the bridge on Saturday afternoon. There’s also music, dance parties and of course, live urban art.
Ottawa Fashion Week is also entering its 10th season, getting underway on Friday – and although the main event is the runway shows, they’ve got a fashion market and a charity event to round out the weekend.
Love those old gaming machines? It’s a pinball extravaganza out at Aylmer all day Saturday and Sunday. If you like your games to have a few more body checks, head to the ball hockey 3-on-3 tournament happening on Sunday down at City Hall.
Art takes on bicycling in the collaborative musical Rhythm Ride on Friday night, where a simple ride around the canal will become a crowd-sourced concert by way of radios, gears, LEDs, pedals, processors and a mobile sound system. Down at St Brigid’s, the National Capital Network of Sculptors opens their new exhibit Dimensions, featuring 28 local sculptors from around the city. Want to make your own sculptures? Get muddy and creative out in Perth Saturday afternoon. Pressed Cafe goes the literary route this weekend, with the In/Words Magazine showcase and Paul Mackan’s book launch.
As we reported earlier this week, West Wellington and Hintonburg have seen a few new restaurants open recently – get a taste of them and others at Tastes of Wellington West on Saturday from 11-5. There will be samples, discounts and music along the entire stretch of the street – go early to get the best samples! If that’s not enough to sustain you, head up Nanny Goat Hill for the Good Food Market on Saturday.
Get out for some jazz with the Montreal Toronto Jazz Collective, an amalgamation of two bands that will lead to even better sounds. It’s Kitchen Party on Friday night at Rochester Pub, while The Apollohs release their new EP down at Avant Garde. No Joy and Boyhood also play Friday night, down at Cafe Dekcuf, and Monday brings Pere Ubu and Gagarin to Mavericks.
Capital City Cabaret: Theatre Carnaval is back for another year, with their circus-themed variety show featuring burlesque dancers, performers and other dazzling artists. We’ve got two pairs of tickets to giveaway – just leave a comment below, mentioning what your burlesque name would be if you were in this show. Leave your comments by Friday, Sept. 13 at noon – we’ll randomly pick two winners then!
