The Volleyball Nations League (VNL) made its return to Ottawa from June 4–8, as TD Place Arena played host to Week 1, Pool 1 of the women’s tournament for the first time in the city. Fans packed the stands throughout the week, including a crowd of over 5,100 for Canada’s Saturday night clash against Japan.
Team Canada finished the week with a 2–2 record, showing both promise and grit. The week began on a high note, with Canada securing a solid win over Bulgaria that went to five sets. However, they faced a setback on Thursday, falling to the Netherlands 3–1, despite moments of strong play.
Saturday’s much-anticipated matchup against Japan, a crowd favourite, showcased the sheer strength of the undefeated Japanese squad. Japan, who dominated every team they faced, beat Canada in straight sets.

Japan emerged as the standout team of the tournament’s opening week, sweeping all four of their matches without losing a single set, firmly establishing themselves as early favorites in this year’s VNL.
As the spotlight shifts, Canada’s men’s team is now gearing up for their turn. Week 1 of the Men’s VNL kicks off in Quebec City on June 15, where they’ll face a challenging pool featuring Italy, France (the reigning Olympic champions), Argentina, Germany, and Bulgaria. With the hometown crowd behind them, the Canadian men will look to make their own statement on the international stage.
