There are all sorts of cyclists out there.  Some folks take to the vast network of Ottawa’s urban trails as their main form of transportation every day; others casually hit the scenic paths around town as a fun way to spend an afternoon.  Whatever your motivation though anybody who owns a bike will likely agree that biking feels great and that’s what Capital Velo Fest wants more folks to know!

The Ottawa based non-profit organization makes it their mission to “inspire people of all ages to ride a bike more often” by creating cycling related events and activities that educate and entertain.

This Friday September 25th they’re presenting Tour La Nuit: a parade of illuminated, decorated bicycles streaking brightly across an otherwise darkened route along the Rideau Canal, out to the Experimental Farm and back again.  It’s a great opportunity for riders of all ages to experience the thrill of post-sunset riding and to see the city at night from a whole new perspective.

The night gets started from 5pm-7:30pm at City Hall with live music and the chance to illuminate your bike with a complimentary colour wheel light at the Gear Zone.   Grab a drink from Bicycle Craft Brewery or chow down on food from local street vendors.  Maybe while you’re there you can also grab a SMOOCH-that’s a smoothie (or margarita) whipped up by the pedal power of a bike!

Once the sun goes down and bikes are shining in all their neon-lit glory the ride gets underway!

The route is about 20km in length but there’s no pressure to go the whole distance or to finish in record time (the designated route remains closed to traffic until 11p.m.)  You can always stop for a break to enjoy some of the live entertainment set up along the path, or you can opt to turn back and rejoin the celebration at City Hall.

Riders are asked to register ahead of time and to bring a printed copy of their ticket to the gate.  Tickets are $20 for adults, $12 for youth, and free for children under 12. There’s also a family option that’s $45.  All proceeds go towards supporting local charities that are dedicated to promoting and improving cycling in the capital region.

Decorate your bike a bit at home before joining fellow cyclists at City Hall to get illuminated and join the ride!
