The Ottawa BlackJacks had a chance to clinch a playoff berth in front of their home crowd at TD Place on Friday afternoon, July 26, but the Saskatchewan Rattlers had other plans. Ottawa fell 96–97 to the league’s last-place team in what could be a costly loss in the tightly packed Eastern Conference.
The Volleyball Nations League (VNL) made its return to Ottawa from June 4–8, as TD Place Arena played host to Week 1, Pool 1 of the women’s tournament for the first time in the city. Fans packed the stands throughout the week, including a crowd of over 5,100 for Canada’s Saturday night clash against Japan.

Team Canada is playing host to some of the world’s top women’s volleyball teams, including Bulgaria, the Dominican Republic, Japan, the Netherlands, and Serbia. The competition runs until June 8, offering fans five days of elite international action and excitement.
The Ottawa BlackJacks had a great second half of the game against the Honey Badgers, winning 105–83. They’re now on the road, returning to Ottawa June 15 for a game against the Niagara River Lions.
The Ottawa BlackJacks dramatically opened their 2025 CEBL campaign in coach DeAveiro’s first official game in charge, falling just short in a nail-biting 87–85 loss to the Niagara River Lions in front of a packed and energized crowd at TD Place. While the team’s outcome was heartbreaking, the performance was anything but disappointing.
The Ottawa BlackJacks are poised for an exciting 2025 season in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), starting their season May 18. The team has a lot of returning stars and some new faces ready to make their mark.
Last weekend may have brought us an extra hour of sleep, but we are now playing in dark mode for the foreseeable future, so don’t squander away those precious daytime hours and enjoy yourself this weekend.
