Silver Creek’s third album, entitled “Princes and Kings” was a real community project. The band “crowd-funded” the album through the website indiegogo, offering everything from copies of the CD to house concerts to thier donors. They have been touring the record throughout Canada, with a trip across the pond to the UK last winter.
Silver Creek has been home for the summer, playing a series of shows in Toronto and Ottawa. This weekend, they take to the Elektro Stage at the Ottawa Bluesfest at 5pm.

We caught up with Mark Laforest from Silver Creek with a few questions by email.
How would you describe your sound?
Our sound has been describe as “southern fried rock and soul”. It’s kind of hard to specifically define, but at the end of the day we’re just a Canadian rock and roll band. We’re not trying to fit in with anyone or change the face of music or anything. We’re just making the music we make because it feels right. It’s a collection of professional musicians who also happen to be best friends and I feel like both of those things are evident in our recordings and key elements of our live performance.
How did the band/act/group start?
The band started out as an outlet for Shawn’s (lead singer) songs. He assembled some friends in the studio and the band grew from there. We played our first gig 7 years ago on the Bluesfest Blacksheep stage and have been at the festival every year since. We all play music for a living and we play together multiple times a week, every week.
What can we expect from your Bluesfest performance?
Our Bluesfest performance will heavily feature material from our new album, Princes and Kings which was released in December of 2011 as well as some new songs we’ve been working on. We’re also introducing a new member to the band as we transition into a 6-piece. Bluesfest every year is a celebration for us personally as it marks the bands’ anniversary and it’s always a fun time. They do a great job of accommodating the local bands and treating them just as well as any of the headliners and they’re doing fantastic work for the local music scene.
Have you ever been on a roller coaster? How was it?
I’ve never been on a roller coaster, but I don’t feel like I need to. The rush we get on stage is better than any roller coaster in the world. Plus, being in a band is a lot like being on an emotional roller coaster at all times anyways. It’s made up entirely of peaks and valleys – one minute you’re in the spotlight on stage and having the time of your life, the next you’re at home all alone and wondering how you’re going to pay your rent. You go from being the life of the party on stage to sitting in a hot van and driving for 10 hours to the next gig.
Silver Creek plays the Electro Stage at Bluesfest this Saturday, July 14 at 5pm.
