It’s showtime, Ottawa! The ghost with the most has landed at the National Arts Centre, as Broadway Across Canada brings us a taste of the underworld, with the musical Beetlejuice. Based on the 1988 Tim Burton film, this demon of a musical conjured up eight Tony award nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score.

Following the story of Lydia Deetz and her obsession with death as her family moves into a new home that just so happens to be haunted by Adam and Barbara, a couple who just recently met their demise. As things escalate, Lydia partners up with Beetlejuice to scare away her dad and get a glimpse into the afterlife.

The show honours the source material but makes the story its own. Full of laughs, emotion and connection, whether a fan of the movie or being introduced to the content for the first time, you will not be disappointed. The staging plays creatively with perspective and brings that seamless Beetlejuice feel through each change in set. Audiences are also treated to seeing your favourite demon’s powers at work with fantastical special effects.

The score is filled with comedic and catchy songs, as well as emotional tunes that you will want to listen to on repeat. The music pulls you into the story while also breaking the fourth wall and further bringing the character of Beetlejuice to life. Canadian Justin Collette brings humour and warmth to every scene he’s in and truly embodies the energy of the show.
