Start at the easternmost fringes of Hintonburg, head up through West Wellington Village, and you should realize the area of the city is a veritable United Nations of cuisine. Going from memory, I can think of restaurants that highlight the tastes of Chile, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Lebanon, Mexico, and the Southern U.S. – and I would not be surprised if I was missing a couple.

But one thing that’s been lacking – until recently – has been a good takeout sushi joint. That changed a few short weeks ago, however, when Sushi Umi opened up near the corner of Wellington and Grange. While I haven’t sampled their maki or sashimi yet, I have poked my head in (the space is small, but it’s nicely designed and the staff are super friendly) and grabbed a takeout menu. Prices are extremely reasonable: $5-6 for an order of tuna or spicy salmon rolls, upwards of $8 for fancier selections like dragon rolls. And they even honour the ‘hood with a “Wellington Roll,” composed of salmon, smoked salmon, and yam, topped with mango and avocado sauce. I’ll admit, I’m stymied by the local connection (I would’ve thought maybe Parkdale Market veggies with a shot of Bridgehead espresso instead of tea?) but I will not judge until I’ve sampled. Which will be soon, I’m sure.

Also in the local sushi news, a new all you can eat joint is opening up on Somerset. We’ll make sure to test that one for you too!
