Recess for adults (mostly) without the hair pulling

By Katie Marsh on March 12, 2009

There is a moment in everyone’s adolescence when they suddenly realize that playtime is over. For some people, it is the last time they put away the plush or plastic toys that no longer amuses them. For others, it is the heart wrenching instant when they realize that, no matter how much they may secretly want to, rolling in the mud while calling their buddies fart-faced butt heads will either get them shunned by their peers or institutionalized by their parents.

For all of us closeted 10 year-olds, Ottawa Sports and Social Club offers us the chance to indulge these secret longings in a place where this behavior may actually make you friends instead of lose them. Online registration for the Spring season starts today. A number of indoor and outdoor sports are available including soccer, basketball, touch football, softball and ultimate Frisbee. There are different leagues to match you level of intensity – recreational, intermediate and competitive (or as I like to call it, cathartic). However, just like gym class, OSSC is not just for the jocks: less sporty activities like dodgeball, kickball and yoga are also available. Most games start in May.

I’ve played for a couple of seasons with a competitive soccer team, and I truly believe that taking a break once a week to run around a field while yelling at the top of my voice and making faces at the other team has made me into the pillar of maturity I am today. So there.
