“It’s not too late to make a difference.” – Dr. Michael Mann

Renowned climate scientist Dr. Michael Mann will discuss his new book, Our Fragile Moment: How Lessons from Earth’s Past Can Help Us Survive the Climate Crisis, at the Ottawa International Writers Festival (OIWF) on Saturday, May 4.

Attendees of his event can expect “a rewarding conversation about the defining challenge we face as a civilization,” according to Mann.

The facts of climate change are all around us, and the data is expansive, so I asked Mann how his book adds to the discourse in a meaningful way.

“Through storytelling,” he responded. “We are hardwired to learn more readily through narrative and imagery.”

Our Fragile Moment uses science and history to illuminate the narrow set of conditions that allow humans to survive on Earth.

“There are many interesting mysteries to be revealed, lessons to be learned, and stories to be told from Earth’s long-term climate history,” Mann wrote. “I use these stories to frame the defining challenge of our time, the climate crisis.”

Yet the climate challenge seems so vast that it often feels like we can’t make a difference.

“As the book reveals, there is both urgency and agency. Yes, climate change is real, and it’s bad. But no, it’s not too late to avert catastrophic climate impacts if we rapidly transition away from our reliance on fossil fuels toward clean energy. It’s still in our hands!”
