Fresh local music whenever you want it. Updated weekly by apt613.ca music writers.  It’s like New Music Friday but for #ottmusic and released on Wednesday. Basically the same thing. Add our playlist on Spotify!

“betty and tommy” by dipper

“betty and tommy” is a folksy and instantly soothing record. The production on this is amazing. I think that’s a horn playing throughout, but I’m not sure which type. It definitely adds a hymn-like quality. [Spotify]

“That’s All” by Church of Trees

This is the song that would play in the montage scene of an old ’90s/2000s series like Buffy. This electro-rock and synth-heavy track is one of the brooding singles on Church of Trees’ new album, Transience. The album can be found on Bandcamp and YouTube. [Spotify]

“Swamp Party” by Smelloship

A funky soul-infused instrumental recording from Ottawa-based band Smelloship, a six-piece ensemble, and you can hear each one clearly but none overwhelms the other. I especially loved the guitar and percussion on this track. It feels alive and spontaneous, so play this when you want to feel similarly. “Swamp Party” is part of their first EP, Smelloship 1, out now! [Spotify]

“Outside” by Banggz

A bragadocious hip hop record tinged with Afrobeats, “Outside” is the song you play to hype your friends up. Its infectious beat is a welcome breath of fresh air. “Outside” is a track on BANGGZ’s forthcoming project 4 THE BANGGERZ. [Spotify]

“Operation Cue” by Area Resident

Now I don’t know anything about conspiracy theories, but this song has me wondering whether I should expect a nuclear catastrophe anytime soon. Inspired by a 1955 U.S. atomic bomb test of the same name, “Operation Cue” explores the effects of such a catastrophe. It’s synth-heavy, reminiscent of slow ’90s rock, and weirdly soothing as long as you don’t listen to the lyrics. [Spotify].
