Vernacular is a new online journal, launched in May 2023, that welcomes submissions in all different mediums, including but not limited to fiction, nonfiction, poetry, photography, visual art and multimedia, as long as they relate to the theme vernacular: “anything that reveals a sense of place.” Current pieces include a lengthy musing on public service acronyms, an interactive Spotify playlist for listeners can add their own song that takes place somewhere in particular, and a photo essay about rooftop dogs in Cuba.

“I often struggle with expressing myself creatively without the pressure to either formalize it or monetize it. Vernacular Journal is what I’ve come up with as a way to build community and creativity. I hope the journal will bring together all kinds of delightful weirdos who want to read, write, or make art about place,” says founder Ashley Denny Petch.

The first issue of Vernacular is now available to view here. Issues will be released quarterly, and they are now accepting submissions for the Fall edition. The submissions page is here.
