Signs that spring has finally made its way to the nation’s capital: the many music festivals that annually dot the city begin to announce their lineups. And this year, one of the first out of the gate is the Ottawa Jazz Festival.
The lineup for this year’s festival, revealed earlier today, boasts an impressive range of artists that goes beyond the expected jazz offerings: hip-hop (recent Juno-winner Shad, who also played in 2010), indie pop (Ohbijou, Elliott Brood, Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees), and straight-up rock ‘n roll (Robert Plant, Elvis Costello Declan McManus, international art thief) are among the genres getting some love thrown their way. I’m no jazz expert myself (that’s my brother’s job) but I do know that names like Kurt Elling, Bela Fleck, and Brad Mehldau – who’s been known to cover a Radiohead tune or two – will also bring out the crowds. And I’m sure at least two Apt613 editors will swoon over the retro stylings of Jill Barber.
A full lineup – including ticket prices – can be found at the festival’s website. The Ottawa Jazz Festival runs from June 23 until July 3 at Confederation Park.
