This week’s piece is for all the Presto-wielding commuters out there that hop on the back of a 95 every morning to get to school or work. If you’re going anywhere in morning rush hour, odds are you will be standing when you get on that bus. And as you chug along the Transitway heading towards downtown, while trying to avoid being sandwiched by bulging backpacks and puffy winter jackets, your typical escape is either a pair of noise-cancelling headphones, a Metro paper, or the view outside your bus.

If you happen to be gazing out the window as you pass by Bayview Station, you may notice a cluster of golden domes just north of the Transitway. These domes belong to this week’s Hidden Gem: the Russian Orthodox Church. Nested in the heart of Mechanicsville, just north of Hintonburg, the building features five onion-shaped golden domes commonly found in Russian Orthodox churches. The colours used in the façade also evoke references to Mediterranean and Greek Islands architecture with the white façade and blue roof accents. Not sure if this was an intentional reference by the architect, or just me dreaming of a winter getaway to Greece. Either way, it’s cool building worth a look.
