Ottawa funk band Smelloship is ready for liftoff, set to launch their debut self-titled EP on February 9 at Irene’s Pub. The instrumental band, known for their focus on composing original music, formed in 2023 and broke out that summer at the Ottawa Jazz Festival.
Led by a stellar lineup of musicians, the instrumental band features Garrett Barr on bass (Slack Bridges, Mackenzie Rhythm Section), Chris Elms on guitar (Slack Bridges, The Winters), Kim Jackson on keyboards (Artichoke Hearts, Fire Antlers), Andre Ferraton on drums (Drew Nelson, DB Cohen and The Revelers), Brady Leafloor on tenor sax (ERU-ERA, Sly High), and Chris Burning on percussion (The Oscillators, Nomad Homstead). Guitar hero Robbie Riggs (The Lionyls, Sly High) will sit in as a special guest at Irene’s.
The Smelloship EP was recorded and mixed by Jason Jaknunas at Metropolitan Studios, adding another feather to his cap of notable contributions to the #ottmusic scene. Jaknunas has previously worked with acclaimed bands such as The Souljazz Orchestra, Atlantis Jazz Ensemble, Moonfruits, and Rebecca Noelle.
Tickets for this funk-filled night are $15 each for general admission. Don’t miss the chance to catch Smelloship in their hometown, as their current trajectory could see the band setting out on tour this year.
