There’s another food event in town this weekend. The Underground Chef’s Market is bringing together some amateur and professional food folks at the Ottawa Convention Centre to experiment with their ideas and show off some skills. It should be an interesting opportunity to taste some new stuff. There are only two names on the list (327 Wine Bar and Gong-fu Bao) that I recognize.Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door and food at the show is priced between $1 and $10. We shot a few questions over to Roy, one of the event’s organizers, to sort out what the market is all about.
Apt613: What is your goal for the Underground Chef’s Market? Can you tell us how the idea came about?
Roy: My goal with the UCM is to introduce the future of food in Ottawa and promote and support independent chefs and food entrepreneurs. We want Ottawa to taste new and upcoming creative food. We want to re-shape Ottawa’s culinary landscape by the promotion of these independent chefs.
Apt613: You are including amateur chefs in your event. How do you think amateur chef’s contribute to the local food scene?
Roy: These amateur chefs are individuals that want to start their own food joints. They found that this event will allow them to test the market and have their future customers taste their food and give them feedback. These chefs are what contribute to Ottawa’s culinary scene, not the franchises. That’s exactly who we want to promote.
Apt613: What will make the Underground Chef’s Market different from other food events in the city?
Roy: The UCM is different from other food events because this is the only place where Ottawa can taste food cooked by chefs that don’t have their joints. This is the only place to come and check them out. Yes, we do also have established businesses that are participating, all with one main goal: introduce Ottawa to some tasty creative street-food and promote their culinary skills. It will be a fun night out with a DJ, local art and some good food!
Apt613: What local food trend is making you most excited? Anything new come to the surface after organizing the market?
As for food trends, we will let attendees decide! Vendors are pushing the boundaries and introducing new street-food to Ottawa.
You can find tickets on Eventbrite and more info on Facebook. The event runs from 5-10pm at the Ottawa Convention Centre on November 30.
