Many choose to kick off their New Year’s resolutions of health and wellness by participating in Dry January. For the uninitiated, Dry January consists of abstaining from alcohol for the whole month. It can be a grind.

Interestingly for a brewery, Dominion City Brewing Co. is also participating in Dry January by hosting a non-alcoholic cocktail workshop. DCBC’s City Seltzer line is teaming up with Knyota Non-Alcoholic Drinks to present two separate sessions where participants can learn how to create classy mocktails.

Dominion founder Josh McJannett appreciates the balance these new offerings can provide. “We know there’s a lot of curiosity and interest in Dry January,” says McJannett, “We’ve heard from our fans, family, and even our team members that a month without alcohol is something more people are trying out. While beer will always have our heart, we’re all for Dry January. We have definitely noticed a growing trend and it’s part of why we’ve worked so hard to build a year-round, non-alcoholic offering.”

The non-alcoholic workshop sessions will be led by local celebrity and mixologist Tristan Bragaglia-Murdock. Tristan’s impressive resumé includes experience as a professional brewer and cider- and wine-maker. You may recognize him from his years behind the bar in Union 613’s Speakeasy, he’s a co-founder of Jabberwocky, and is now a sommelier at Fauna. The three-drink 90 minute sessions also include paired snacks from Almanac.

Dominion City takes a more holistic view of their offerings. “There’s always going to be space for a beer, but people being more mindful about consumption, appreciating quality, and even taking time away from alcohol is something we support,” explains McJannett. “I think the idea with these classes is really to have a bit of fun and bring some of the approaches that work so well with alcohol to bear on non-alcoholic drinks.”

We agree: Nothing beats quality drinks, boozy or not.

Dry January Cocktail Workshops at Dominion City Brewing Company (15-5510 Canotek Rd) take place Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7pm and Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3:30pm and 7pm. Tickets can be found here.
