This week in Ottawa, GRAMMY-nominated singer Joshua Hopkins performs the world premiere of Songs for Murdered Sisters with the NAC Orchestra.

Commissioned specifically for Joshua Hopkins and the NAC Orchestra, Songs for Murdered Sisters is a deeply personal new song cycle composed by Jake Heggie set to original poetry by Margaret Atwood.

Following the murder of his sister Nathalie Warmerdam and two other women at the hands of an ex-partner, Hopkins set out on a journey to use his voice to wake people up to the issue of gender-based violence. The murders devastated the Ottawa Valley communities of Renfrew County, where Hopkins grew up, and the orchestral world premiere of this work is an extraordinary moment for Hopkins and his friends and family who lost a sister, daughter, friend and loved one on September 22, 2015. Many will have been invited to attend the premiere at Southam Hall in the National Arts Centre, which will also be attended by Margaret Atwood and the composer Jake Heggie.
